I membri della famiglia Kennedy hanno reagito duramente alla decisione del consiglio di The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts di rinominare l'istituzione "Trump Kennedy Center". Maria Shriver, un'altra nipote del defunto presidente, ha criticato anche lei la mossa, sottolineando il ruolo di Kennedy nell'elevare le arti durante la sua presidenza. In una lunga dichiarazione, ha affermato che il centro è stato intitolato in onore di un presidente che apprezzava la cultura, l'educazione e l'espressione artistica, aggiungendo che affiancare il nome del Presidente Trump a quello di Kennedy era "inaccettabile". Si è chiesta se altri monumenti nazionali potrebbero essere i prossimi obiettivi, tra cui l'Aeroporto JFK o il Lincoln Memorial.

Kerry Kennedy ha fatto eco a quelle preoccupazioni, scrivendo che l'amministrazione Trump ha passato l'ultimo anno a "reprimere l'espressione libera" e che i valori del Presidente Trump sono in contrasto con quelli del Presidente Kennedy. Ha detto che il nome di Trump non dovrebbe essere affiancato a quello di suo zio. Joe Kennedy III, pronipote del Presidente Kennedy ed ex membro del Congresso, ha dichiarato che il Kennedy Center è un memoriale vivente intitolato dal diritto federale e "non può più essere rinominato di quanto qualcuno possa rinominare il Lincoln Memorial."
Intanto, la Rappresentante Joyce Beatty (D-OH), un membro ex officio del consiglio, ha dichiarato che le è stato tolto il microfono durante l'incontro e non ha potuto sollevare obiezioni al voto.

Il Kennedy Center è stato designato come un memoriale al Presidente John F. Kennedy sotto una statuto del Congresso firmato dal Presidente Lyndon B. Johnson nel 1964. La designazione legale ha sollevato interrogativi sul fatto se il consiglio abbia l'autorità di rinominare l'istituzione. Robert F. Kennedy Jr., un altro nipote del defunto presidente che attualmente serve come Segretario della Salute e dei Servizi Umani nell'amministrazione Trump, non ha commentato pubblicamente la decisione.
