That Which is Heard at The Howland Company

'Recovery' is an intimate documentary film premiering at DOCNYC this November. The film is told through the eyes of Shruti Kothari, a former Stratford Festival actress whose world drastically changed in March 2020 when she suffered a stroke at the age of 30, just days before the onset of the global pandemic. Her road to recovery is chronicled on screen as she and her three close friends—Ruth Goodwin (The Howland Company), Liz Johnston (The Second City), and acclaimed director Ravi Jain (Why Not Theatre/The Stratford Festival) join forces to create a deeply personal storytelling show reflecting Shruti’s experiences, her complex relationship with theatre before and after her stroke, and the profound changes in her life since that pivotal moment.

The film captures the creative process as Shruti returns to theatre for the first time since her stroke, blending raw, unscripted footage with intimate and authentic moments of theatricality and connection.
