FAMILY PICTURES USA, a new three-part PBS series created and hosted by filmmaker and photographer Thomas Allen Harris, explores American cities, towns and rural communities through the lens of the family photo album, unearthing rich personal stories that expand our understanding of our shared history, diversity and common values. Family photos of everyday milestones — marriage, childhood, a new car, a growing business — provide a visual portal through which to examine the roots, surprising connections and provocative parallels that shed light on our collective past and our shared future. From the streets of Detroit to the shores of Southwest Florida to the farm fields of North Carolina, participants introduce ancestors, parents and old friends — fascinating characters brought to life through a treasure trove of images and stories handed down through generations. Produced in partnership with Detroit Public Television, UNC-TV Public Media North Carolina and WGCU Public Media, FAMILY PICTURES USA premieres Monday, August 12, 9:00-10:00 p.m. ET and Tuesday, August 13, 8:00-10:00 p.m. (check local listings) on PBS, PBS.org and the PBS Video App.

Between 1968 and 1971, thirteen thousand Polish Jews were forced to leave Poland, their homeland. After The Six-Day War in 1967 (the creation of the State of Israel) and students' protests at Polish universities, Wladyslaw Gomulka, the first secretary of the Central Committee of the Polish United Workers' Party, gave a speech on March 8, 1968, which started an anti-Semitic campaign in communist Poland. Now 50 years after these events, Michal Zadara along with a team of historians and lawyers are looking for an answer in the play Justice (now playing at Powszechny Theatre). Should someone be prosecuted for the exile of those people?

On World Refugee Day, public television's WORLD Channel announced the lineup of films for season 3 of Doc World, a series that showcases stories that dive deep into the heart of international issues, giving viewers a chance to understand the lives and concerns of people beyond U.S. borders. The first three films of the season, kicking off Sunday, September 9, entitled: Sky and Ground, Los Comandos, and Towards the North, all follow refugees fleeing their homes in search of asylum.
