The 79th Annual Tony Awards are this Sunday, June 7, 2026. It's the biggest awards show of the Broadway season and it closes out a long awards season for Broadway and Off-Broadway musicals and plays. Which Best Musical and Best Play nominees will take home the ultimate prize?

Mike Leigh's black comedy ABIGAIL'S PARTY, directed by Nadia Fall, will transfer to the Harold Pinter Theatre following its Theatre Royal Stratford East run, with Tamzin Outhwaite and Kevin Bishop leading the cast.

What is a pro-shot and how is it different than an adapted film? Pro-shot is an abbreviation for professionally shot, denoting a stage play that was captured in its native habitat: a theatre. In general, a pro-shot seeks to film the exact experience that audience members would have at a live performance of the show, in contrast with a feature film which actually adapts the piece into a new form, including different locations, the removal of theatrical aesthetic, and changes to make the script work as a film as opposed to as a live theatrical show.

Musicals and plays based on movies? Many. Based on books? Also plentiful. Based on true stories? Of course. But musicals and plays based on or inspired by magazine articles? These are a rare breed. One recently opened on Broadway at the August Wilson Theatre.

Broadway has a long history of one-person shows, including many that have been added to the canon in this century.  Seeing one actor powerfully create a whole world on stage can be an exceptional experience. Of course, one handers are hardly one-person projects; while there may only be one actor on stage, they are collaborating with an entire team of creatives, designers, and behind-the-scenes personnel to bring a show to life.

The heightened reality replete with elongated pauses –(do people really wait this long in real life to answer one another?) that emanates from the stage of the Pulitzer- Prize and Tony -winning production of Stereophonic –now being produced in a touring /edited two hour and 50-minute version at the National Theatre-- certainly grabbed my attention.

It had been over a decade since DEBBY BOONE last performed in Los Angeles, until she performed her appropriately titled show, IT'S BEEN AWHILE at Vibrato Grill Jazz in November 2025. Debby is thrilled to make her debut at the iconic 54 Below in Manhattan on February 26 before returning to the West Coast at The Coach House in San Juan Capistrano on March 1. She shared recently that ideally she would love to play both coasts at CARNEGIE HALL and WALT DISNEY CONCERT HALL in her near future. One, The Phantom of the Opera, closed in 2023 after attaining the title of longest running Broadway show of all time.  But what about Broadway’s longest running plays?

The Sarasota Players’ production of Annie is a bright, big-hearted reminder of why this musical has endured for nearly half a century. From the moment the first notes rang out, the production radiated joy, grit, and that unmistakable sense of optimism that has made Annie a staple of American musical theater. This show was a community coming together to tell a story that still lives in the hearts of so many.

I had the pleasure of seeing the original Broadway production of Stereophonic that ruled the 2023 awards season becoming most Tony Award-nominated play of all time, winner of five. My thoughts then were brilliant concept excellently executed, and this touring production, making its San Francisco debut duplicates the magic of this intimate look into the recording of a studio album.
