What did our critic think of THE WATSONS at Stagecraft Theatre?

The flimsy theme holding together this year’s summer season at Shakespeare’s Globe is ‘1599 or 1939’, which has allowed them to stage a work by Brecht as well as several Shakespeare plays which are frequent flyers at this theatre complex. Fortunately it leaves room for something which hasn’t been produced for either stage since Michelle Terry’s inaugural season in 2018; this Love’s Labour’s Lost, however, finds itself in the outdoor Globe Theatre and with a distinctive Spanish flavour.

Recently, we had the chance to speak with Annie-B Parson, the choreographer of American Utopia. We discussed what first drew her to dance and choreography, what it was like to work with David Byrne and the musicians to create a fully choreographed concert and some of her favourite moments from the show.

Beautifully and tenderly directed by Matthew McCray, this ferociously performed and often visually hypnotic intimate production of the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical is such a pleasant surprise, instantly becoming one of Chance Theater's most piercingly emotional new musicals it has ever produced. This vibrant and humanely grounded new production of the 2018 jukebox musical—featuring music from Alanis Morissette—continues performances in Anaheim Hills through August 9, 2026.

Over the years, Broadway has seen a number of family acts sharing the stage. It’s extra special when family members team up to write a Broadway show together. The Great White Way has seen many instances of this historically, in a variety of different situations. 

Whether you are Team Black or Team Green, there is probably a stage veteran on your side. Like other HBO shows such as The Gilded Age and Julia, the Game of Thrones spin-off, House of the Dragon, is full of Broadway, West End, and stage alums. 

Three-time Grammy nominated singer/songwriter Luke James has joined the Broadway cast of  WANTED. James will star as Elijah, alongside Solea Pfeiffer as Mary Clarke, Liisi LaFontaine as Martha Clarke and Ledisi as Tallulah Clarke.

Director Glenn Kelman is to be commended for taking on the challenge of coordinating twenty cast members moving scenery and set pieces into place to create 22 set changes in 14 locations on such a small stage, as well as setting the timing of each Ameri-News video projection to forward the story. And to Music Director Jared Scott for doing his best to get so many non-singers to harmonize on-key, and Choreographer Kylie Christensen for diligently doing her best to mold what should be a big musical production into a space better suited for a small cast play.

The contemporary ballet company, Chamber Dance Project (CDP): Its bringing together of soloist-level professional ballet dancers during their lay-off periods from major professional companies and partnering them with equally talented musicians and boundary pushing choreographers.

Kerry Washington is returning to the stage in The Whoopi Monologues, Lincoln Center Theater's new production of Whoopi Goldberg’s show. This project marks a full-circle moment for the Emmy-winner, who first performed the material as a kid in what were some of her earliest preliminary acting experiences.
