So what does a cabaret director do? Today in my ongoing series, THERE ARE NO ONE-PERSON SHOWS, we will find out from one of the busiest cabaret directors in New York, Marc Tumminelli. Marc is the founder of Broadway Workshop, which provides year-round, professional-level classes and workshops for kids 8-19 with some of the finest artists working on Broadway and in the West End. He is also the founder of Project Broadway, a non-profit that provides scholarship opportunities to young performers.

Northern Stage will produce a magical new adaptation of family favourite The Sorcerer's Apprentice this Christmas (27 November - 31 December). Set in the streets of Newcastle but not quite as we know it, audiences will be treated to live music, puppetry, magic and illusion as they follow the adventures of Hatty Rabbit and her friends after a mysterious letter arrives inviting Hatty to an interview for a sorcerer's apprentice...

The interrupted 2020 world premiere of Rosanna Gamson’s SUGAR HOUSES will re-open the REDCAT July 8, 2021 for four live performances. Now announcing plans for The Restart Season (2021-2022), the Realm's 15th anniversary season, the organization expands on what it's learned across this last year. The Playwrights Realm will forgo productions for a host of resources designed to help make this restart one in which artists and audiences are taken care of first.

Daniel Gwirtzman Dance Company will present Dance With Us, an educational digital platform centered around the premiere of a series of new dance films. LDM Publishing has announced a new partnership with producer/songwriter Morgan Dorr whose successes include recordings with artists such as Fitz and the Tantrums, KT Tunstall, Bella Thorne, Victoria Justice, Lolo, Wrabel, Cimorelli, Haley Reinhart, Nikki Vianna, Pete Murray, Chaz Cardigan, Brandon Colbein, Transviolet and Emma Rosen.

Morgan has also proven his ability to tune into what advertisers want, having written and/or produced songs for multiple global ad campaigns including Jeep’s Super Bowl “4x4ever” and “Main Street Love: Meet Sam” for Truist Financial.

Actor-writer-lawyer Mark McGoldrick is someone with an unusually compelling life story. A self-described former “f**kup” whose youth was largely spent in a haze of drug use and delinquency, McGoldrick was involved in a horrifying accident that could have cost him his life and did leave him paralyzed. Instead of wallowing in self-pity, McGoldrick used this tragedy as an opportunity to reset his life. He went to Harvard Law School and became a public defender for Alameda County, representing people, mostly of color, charged with the same offenses of his earlier days. A number of years ago, he felt the compulsion to start putting his riveting stories onstage by writing and performing solo shows. McGoldrick is now chronicling his story over four monthly episodes in Countercoup, The Marsh’s first broadcast series. Countercoup will be presented the first weekend of each month, May 1 – August 8, 2021 with a new installment performed each weekend at 7:30pm (PDT), Saturdays and 5:00pm (PDT), Sundays. BroadwayWorld recently spoke with McGoldrick while he was on a break from his day job as a public defender in downtown Oakland. We discussed how he was able to recover from personal tragedy and to harness his innate mouthiness to use it for the greater good, how his stage work can affect his loved ones, ongoing issues with our justice system, and some unanticipated benefits from the Covid pandemic for folks with disabilities. As expected, he was fascinating to talk to – keenly intelligent and brutally honest with a sly sense of humor, but also deeply thoughtful, considerate and ultimately quite hopeful. He has a propensity to speak in long, complex sentences that manifest his experience as a public defender.

Skylight Theatre Company begins its 2021 season of Skylight LIVE April 24, 2021; with Robin Gerber’s THE SHOT starring the incomparable Sharon Lawrence. This behind-the-scenes story of The Washington Post publisher Katherine Graham is directed by Michelle Joyner and produced by SPARKS Theatricals. Sharon managed to squeeze some time for my queries between filming Rebel and her many social justice commitments.

Actor/singer/comedian Brian O’Sullivan will perform his and Little Fish's first live Zoom LITTLE FISH, BIG LAUGHS WITH BRIAN O'SULLIVAN April 2 & 3, 2021. A regular denizen of the Los Angeles comedy clubs and theatre community, Brian will communicate his comic tales peppered with his witty lyrics and guitar-playing.

It’s a common presumption to ascribe natural talent to a genetic blueprint. But some will defy the notion and perceive talent as a by-product of one’s environment. While the debate lingers, we have a chance to appraise a talented artist who knows a thing or two about genes: Dennis Tamblyn. 

The criteria are that these shows have been nominated for Best Musical from the 3rd Tony Awards (the ceremony that started the Best Musical category) in 1949 to the nominations of what will now be the 74th Tony Awards in 2021. I will be determining their signs based upon their Broadway premiere date. With those rules in mind, here we go!
