The Sorcerer 1877

It is hard to believe that Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's first ballet, Swan Lake, created in 1877 for the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, was a failure, so striking is its music's melodic power. It was not until twenty years later - but Tchaikovsky was already dead - that the ballet was brought to the stage in the choreography of Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov.

What an absolute honour it was to watch The United Ukrainian Ballet’s production of Swan Lake. The experience truly felt like a moment in history. This production of Swan Lake not only allows audiences to reconnect with a beloved ballet favourite, but to also see the story’s themes through the lens of the current situation in Ukraine.

The Blue Hill Troupe, Ltd., New York City's only philanthropic theater group, will close its 98th season April 27 - May 1 with six performances of Gilbert & Sullivan's The Sorcerer, the duo's third collaboration and first full-length operetta. Performances will take place at El Teatro of El Museo del Barrio, 1230 Fifth Avenue in Manhattan.

Unlike nowadays, with Swan Lake considered the most prestigious icon of classic masterpieces, both in dance and music, the first year performance in Bolshoi Theatre was not favored by critics or audiences.

Maine State Ballet celebrates the 140th Anniversary of Swan Lake with a three week, 12 performance run of the quintessential classic ballet, March 24 through April 9, at Maine State Ballet's Lopez Theater.

For years I have been saying that the best kept secret in Ventura County theater is the Ventura County Gilbert & Sullivan Repertoire Company. Celebrating its 10th season this year, the VCGSRC is currently going through its second cycle of the eleven operettas in the canon produced by the venerable English composing team of lyricist/librettist W. S. Gilbert and composer Sir Arthur Sullivan. Its production of The Sorcerer, now playing at the Hillcrest Center for the Arts, was the first complete G&S opera, first performed in 1877. It's a marvelous production for the Halloween season, beautifully sung and acted, with a typically witty G&S story, albeit with a serious undercurrent.
