Come learn all about the musical instruments that make up an orchestra with Pacific Symphony's "The Wizard's Spellbook" concert this Halloween season! The Symphony takes the stage Oct. 27 at 10:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. in the Renee and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall, led by Assistant Conductor and Music Director of Pacific Symphony Youth Orchestra, Roger Kalia. On December 6, 2018, Kahchun Wong, Chief Conductor of the Nuremberg Symphony, will make his Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra debut leading the orchestra in a varied program repertoire that showcases his versatility as an artist with works by Dukas, Bartok, Barber, and Stravinsky. Joining Wong and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra will be pianist Denis Kozhukhin. Short on financial resources but long on ambition, Utopia Opera started its eighth season last weekend with a New York premiere: Thea Musgrave's THE STORY OF HARRIET TUBMAN. It's a 90-minute chamber version, orchestrated by composer Julian Grant, of Musgrave's full-length, two-act HARRIET, THE WOMAN CALLED MOSES, which debuted in 1985 at the Virginia Opera, with some fervent portrayals by its cast of about two dozen, including the stellar soprano MaKayla McDonald as Harriet and mezzo Karmesha Peake as her mother, Rit.
