A breakdown of  union labor relations, abuse in the workplace and  demands for higher wages surely doesn't sound like the stuff of musical comedy. Unless you're speaking of the classic 1954 musical THE PAJAMA GAME, now playing at the Lancaster Opera House. 

The challenge of updating theatrical classics has led to some truly stunning theatre, such as the sell-out Cabaret and last year’s darkly stark OKLAHOMA! Frank Loesser’s 1950 musical comedy about sin and romantic salvation during the height of Prohibition was ripe for an update and Nicholas Hytner’s immersive production of Guys & Dolls has been thrilling critics and audiences alike since it opened last year.

DREAMING OF LEAR is a brilliant, memorable piece of leading-edge experimental theater. Its director, Lucy Cashion, has, I think, the most refreshing brain in the St. Louis theater world.  It’s been a decade since she appeared on my horizon, and in that time she’s led a number of exciting productions.  She joined the SLU faculty and has recently become Director of the school’s Theatre & Dance Program—a position which is virtually (and was perhaps literally) “made for her”. 

Kadimah Yiddish Theatre’s remarkable adaptation of Yentl has returned to Malthouse. Winner of four Green Room Awards after a stellar 2022 debut season, this production is a must see for those wanting a thought-provoking, and at times confronting exploration of how gender, sexuality, culture, and religion all collide together.

NTPA Repertory Theatre will present the musical All Shook Up March 15-24, 2024 at the Rodenbaugh Theatre in Willow Bend Center of the Arts.

This revival of Grease is close to perfection… and dare I say it, I think I prefer it to the film! Not only do we get to follow Sandy and Danny in Grease The Musical, we also become more acquainted with all the Pink Ladies and T-Birds, which results in Grease The Musical feeling much more of a Rydell High ensemble show. Something that is most welcome.

What I admire most about TUTS is their willingness to cast local Houston talent of all levels, and allowing them to work on a show with musical theater professionals from around the country. They are the soul of Houston theater in many ways, and it is lovely to see them honor that legacy with their holiday show.

As the audience grew restless awaiting the start of the play, the near twenty minute delay had me wondering if there would even be a production. Luckily, the play started and the wait, though unexplained, was worth it. Buffalo's Irish Classical Theatre's production of Athol Fugard's riveting 'MASTER HAROLD'... AND THE BOYS proved to be a captivating afternoon.
