It is the summer of 1859 and inside a small courthouse in Springfield, Illinois, a 22-year-old man named Peachy Quinn Harrison is on trial for murder. What might have been a quiet local case is suddenly thrust into the national spotlight when rising political star (and rumored dark-horse favorite for the presidency) Abraham Lincoln is hired to defend the young man.

National New Play Network, the country's alliance of professional theaters that collaborate in innovative ways to develop, produce, and extend the life of new plays, announces its 2018-19 grant recipients, including the 2018 Smith Prize for Political Theatre, six Producer Residencies, and five Collaboration Fund awards that will support partnerships between multiple Member Theaters, playwrights, and other theater makers in various projects.

Conductor and Composer David Newman is known for creating the music for nearly 100 films, including "Serenity" (2005), "Ice Age" (2002), "Anastasia" (1997), "Matilda" (1996) and many others. He comes from a dynasty of composers, the Newman family being the most nominated for Academy Awards, all 92 for film scoring, arrangement or original song. Jon Burlingame is the nation's leading writer on the subject of music for film and television, and has recently written about the composers and scores in "Phantom Thread," "Black Panther" and "Star Trek: Discovery." He is a lecturer at the University of Southern California, a best-selling author and a regular writer for Variety magazine. Dean Parisot is a film and television director who has recently worked on shows such as "Santa Clarita Diet," "Grace and Frankie" and the pilot for the new NBC dramedy "Good Girls." Parisot is also known for directing the films "Galaxy Quest," "RED 2" and "Fun with Dick and Jane."   

The New Jersey Performing Arts Center present famed astrophysicist and best-selling author Neil deGrasse Tyson - the host of Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey on FOX, and NOVA ScienceNOW and Origins on PBS - returns by popular demand with a fun, family-friendly evening designed to help unravel the mysteries of modern science.

REPRISE 2.0 is now announced, presenting a season of three classic American musicals at UCLA's Freud Playhouse, by Marcia Seligson, Producing Artistic Director of the new performing arts organization.  REPRISE 2.0 is partnering with the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television's Department of Theater (UCLA TFT), chaired by Brian Kite.

It was so brave for a band to record themselves at that time: it allowed a direct and undiluted account of the band as aspirational, big-hearted friends in love with making music and each other. Exploring storytelling and creativity in sound, On Air Fest will be held on March 1st through 4th. The podcast and audio festival brings together the creative vanguard thinkers, creators, performers, and storytellers for four days of deep-dive engagements including explorations of process, new works, and exhibitions. All programming will take place at Wythe Hotel (80 Wythe Ave at N. 11th Street), the Brooklyn-based boutique hotel known for its commitment to culture, food, and community.

November programming has been announced at City Winery Chicago. Highlights of the month include multi-night runs from Jazz vocalist (and Chicago transplant) Lizz Wright (Nov. 1-2), Herb Alpert of Tijuana Brass with his wife, Grammy-winning singer Lani Hall, (Nov. 6-7), and four shows over two days with saxophonist Kurt Elling (Nov. 25-26) plus a benefit for Merit School of Music with Nico Segal (previously known as Donnie Trumpet from the Chance the Rapper-affiliated band, The Social Experiment) and The JuJu Exchange (Nov. 28) and much more.

New York City Ballet will open its 2017-18 Season at Lincoln Center today, September 19, and will continue with 21 weeks of performances, through Sunday, June 3, featuring 61 ballets by 15 different choreographers.
