'60s musical comedy confection HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY TRYING is all about climbing the corporate ladder by hook or (mostly) crook.

CONVERSATIONS WITH MY FATHER is kind of a misnomer. The character of Eddie Ross (nee Goldberg) doesn't converse as much as harangue the people around him. But, don't take this as a knock on Herb Gardner's play; it's more of a clarification than anything. This isn't just the ramblings of a bitter old man, but an exploration of his particular experience immigrating to America, and trying to fit in by rejecting his Jewish heritage.

Lerner and Loewe created MY FAIR LADY from Bernard Shaw's "Pygmalion". Rodgers and Hammerstein adapted the 1909 Ferenc Molnar play "Liliom" and transplanted the setting from Budapest to the coast of Maine in CAROUSEL. That's generally how musicals are birthed. Not so with THE DROWSY CHAPERONE, which makes its nascency the more intriguing and Broadway fanciful.

'People need theatre in small towns. People need theatre in smaller cities, in different cities. We need it everywhere. It's important as an artist to remember that. It's not just about going for the brass ring - sometimes the brass ring is right there, sitting at home.'
by Beau Higgins - Feb 11, 2010
Adapted for the American stage from Ferenc Molnar's 1909 play, Liliom, Carousel was one of the first musicals to contain a tragic plot. It is also unique among Rodgers and Hammerstein's works in that it does not have an overture, but begins with the Carousel Waltz. Often cited by Richard Rodgers as his favorite musical, the play also introduced such classics as You'll Never Walk Alone, June is Bustin' Out All Over, and If I Loved You. Time Magazine named it the best musical of the 20th Century.
