Utah Symphony and Utah Opera (USUO) unveil a series of creative projects to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Golden Spike, the ceremonial final spike that joined the rails of America's First Transcontinental Railroad at Promontory Summit, Utah in 1869. After a concert with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir on Friday, May 10 at 8:00 p.m.-exactly 150 years to the day since the railroad's completion-USUO presents performances throughout the month of May that feature works newly composed to mark this anniversary. These events and many others are highlighted as part of Spike 150 (spike150.org), a statewide effort to celebrate the Golden Spike.

The Broadway sensation WICKED flew out of the Eccles Theater on Sunday, March 3rd after a 41-performance return engagement in Salt Lake City, presented by Broadway at the Eccles/Broadway Across America.  WICKED's fourth play in Salt Lake City grossed over $12 million in sales and was seen by over 100,000 patrons.

92Y announces award-winner Gavin Creel for the annual Kathryn W. Stein Memorial Concert, on Monday, June 17 at 2 pm. Creel will pay homage to the American musical songbook and recreate memorable songs from his distinguished Broadway career, including his Tony and Drama Desk Award-winning role in Hello, Dolly!, performing with Bette Midler and Bernadette Peters, Waitress, Thoroughly Modern Millie (Tony nomination), La Cage Aux Folles, Hair (Tony nomination), The Book of Mormon and She Loves Me. As with each passing season, 2018 proved to be another exceptional year for theater not only in Souther California in general but also in Orange County---my home base. This year, the OC finally welcomed the debut of what has become this century's most awarded and most renowned stage musical ever about the Founding Father etched regally on the 10 dollar bill. Meanwhile, So. Cal. enjoyed a powerful surge of new stage works that explored Asian-American experiences, a positive step forward in the presentation of diverse voices we seldom hear from on the stage. A pair of touring musicals---both opening in the O.C. in early 2019---made such an impact in their Los Angeles engagements for me personally that I had to include them in my list, even though I have not 'officially' reviewed the productions for print. With that said, here is my 'Best of 2018' from Orange County and adjacent locales nearby---a mixture of outstanding shows and brilliant performances that made a lasting, memorable imprint in my theatergoing experience this year.
