'Distant Observer: Tokyo/New York Correspondence' is a collaboration between Japanese playwright/director Takeshi Kawamura and American playwright/director John Jesurun. The project is conceived as a play written and directed in collaborative partnership by both artists. Written in sequential chapters by each playwright, it combines two noted and formative artists of the same generation, both with distinct voices and significant work, in a deep creative conversation across cultures. Its plot follows a supposed murderer who reinvents himself, and is reinvented by circumstance, in a series of adventures in the Suicide Forest of Japan.  La MaMa will present the play's world premiere, directed by Jesurun, March 16 to April 1 in its Ellen Stewart Theatre, 66 East Fourth Street.

Palm Beach Opera today announced its 2018-2019 mainstage opera season, which will include performances of Giuseppe Verdi's La Traviata, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Don Giovanni, and Johann Strauss' Die Fledermaus, as well as a new concert, Rising Stars of Opera. The setting is April 23, 1961, when a 38-year-old Judy Garland performed at Carnegie Hall in what the New York Times called 'the concert of the century.' Her Carnegie Hall appearance marked a huge comeback for the star. The live recording Judy at Carnegie Hall received five Grammy Awards and went Gold within a year. When Judy stepped out onto the stage at Carnegie Hall that night, the raucous standing ovation that greeted her was just the start of what has been called "the greatest night in show business history." Award-winning actress/singer Jody Briskey channels Judy Garland as she recreates that special night in Garland in Word and Song.

After a short winter respite, Flat Rock Playhouse will kick off its 2018 Season with a one-weekend Music on the Rock concert filled with songs professing the reason for the season of Love! The Old Globe today announced it will present the fifth annual Powers New Voices Festival, a weekend of readings of new American plays by professional playwrights, playing January 12 14, 2018. The festival will kick off today, January 12 at 7:30 p.m. with Voices of the Community: Celebrating Local Playwrights, an evening of work created by San Diego residents through the Globe's arts engagement initiatives Community Voices and coLAB, and will continue with four readings by some of the most exciting voices writing for the American theatre today. The new American play readings commence on Saturday, January 13 at 4:00 p.m. with Laurel Ollstein's They Promised Her the Moon, directed by Giovanna Sardelli (Somewhere, The Whipping Man at the Globe), followed at 7:30 p.m. by Too Heavy for Your Pocket by Jir h Breon Holder, directed by Patricia McGregor (Globe for All's Measure for Measure).The Festival continues on Sunday, January 14 at 3:00 p.m. with The Tale of Despereaux, with book, music, and lyrics by PigPen Theatre Co. (The Old Man and The Old Moon at the Globe), based on the novel by Kate DiCamillo and the Universal Pictures animated motion picture. The Festival will wrap up that evening at 7:30 p.m. with The Great Leap by Lauren Yee, directed by Delicia Turner Sonnenberg (Globe's Skeleton Crew).

A hysterical comedy, a courtroom drama, a family in crisis and a little red-headed orphan will all make their way to the stage of the Sauk Theatre in 2018.
