From March 24th-29th, North Carolina Theatre will be presenting a production of Joe DiPietro & David Bryan's 2010 Tony-winning musical, Memphis, at Raleigh Memorial Auditorium. I recently had the great pleasure of interviewing Robert Hartwell, who will be directing and choreographing the production.

Third Man Records is excited to announce reissues of Redd Kross' two beloved 1990s albums, Phaseshifter (1993) and Show World (1997). The 180-gram vinyl-only reissues, which come on the heels of their amazing 2019 album Beyond The Door and after 40 years as a band, will mark the first-ever North American vinyl pressings of either album. Broadway alum Jacob Brent debuts his first mainstage musical as faculty director in the James Madison University School of Theatre and Dance's production of Side Show, a?oea?? a hypnotic spectacle that packs an emotional wallopa?? (The Hollywood Reporter). 

The Seacoast Repertory Theatre's production of A Chorus Line represents a full circle in the career of its director, Bryan Knowlton. He has gone from unsuccessfully auditioning for a role in the musical as a youth to performing in its Broadway revival. Now he returns to Portsmouth two decades later to direct a production of the story which often mirrors his life. 

Long identified with the legendary choreographer Bob Fosse, CHICAGO has been honored with six Tony Awards (including Best Musical Revival), two Olivier Awards, and a Grammy. The #1 longest-running American musical in Broadway history, CHICAGO is set amidst the spectacular decadence of the 1920s; a musical that has all the stuff that makes Broadway memorable: knockout dancing, a ripped-from-the-headlines story about scandal and one show-stopping song after another (“All That Jazz,” “Cell Block Tango”).  

One of Britain's greatest cricketers, the legendary Graham Gooch OBE, is coming to Liverpool for 'An Evening With Graham Gooch OBE' at The Epstein Theatre at 8pm on Tue 3 March 2020.

A single-act show, it could use an occasional shot in the arm. Some of the songs drag and none are especially memorable. As bus stories goes, the pacing is a long, long way from Speed. The central love triangle between Violet and two boys on the bus (military officers Monty and Flick) feels all too familiar, and its engagement with the theme of interracial romance (Flick is African-American, Monty and Violet are white) feels underserved in a show that is ultimately about self-shame and misguided faith. Still, the show...

During the opening night performance of her fun return engagement at Segerstrom Center for the Arts' Cabaret Series at the Samueli Theatre, Tony Award winner Lillias White felt strongly about putting on a a?oehappy show,a?? as a way to combat all the sadness and fear that have overtaken our world. Joined on stage by her talenteda?"and gleefully playfula?"artistic director/accompanist Abdul Amid, Ms. White definitely accomplished her goal of making us smilea?? while also gifting us with a heaping portion of exactly why she has remained one of musical theater's most treasured voices. Ms. White's show continued for two additional shows on January 24-25, 2020.

New Yiddish Rep will present 'The Whore from Ohio' by Hanoch Levin, Israel's foremost playwright, at Theater for the New City February 19 to 23, performed in Yiddish with projected surtitles. This black comedy, which deals memorably with ultimate questions of fantasy, lust and mortality, is one Levin's most famous plays. It is translated into Yiddish from the original Hebrew by Eli Rosen. Gara Sandler directs.

In what has become an annual ritual, a total of 40 established and emerging composers, lyricists, and librettists will converge on the Goodspeed campus from mid-January through mid-February 2020 to participate in the Johnny Mercer Foundation Writers Colony at Goodspeed Musicals. The writing teams, representing 15 new musicals, will populate the campus, creating a truly exciting environment for discovery and inspiration.

Shakespeare's tragic tornado of familial and political civil war will take the stage at the Barrette Center for the Arts in White River Junction January 22 - February 9. For the holiday season veteran and award-winning stage actor and play director Darryl Maximilian Robinson ( The Founder, Artistic Director and Producer of the multiracial, non-Equity professional chamber theatre, The Excaliber Shakespeare Company of Chicago and a classically-trained Los Angeles-based performer ) returned to his classical theatre experience ( he began his early professional stage career playing leading and featured roles with The 1982 National Shakespeare Company Tour of New York, The 1985 Indianapolis Shakespeare Festival and The 1989 Bristol Renaissance Faire of Kenosha, Wisconsin ) and reunited with talented editor, video-camerman and fellow actor Danny Belrose to record a less-than-perfect 'Street Theatre' rehearsal of the famed 'St. Crispin's Day Speech' as The King from William Shakespeare's 'Henry V' which Mr. Robinson presented upon the steps of The Entrance of LA's Historic Lincoln Heights Jail ( which he referred to as 'The Old Cypress Prison' ) on the afternoon of December 19, 2019 as part of a series of theatrical activities Mr. Robinson is sharing as part of The Excaliber Shakespeare Company Los Angeles Archival Project.

In 2019, I reviewed 30 shows for BroadwayWorld, but I actually wrote more interviews - around 50 articles on my count. Here's my attempt to pick out some highlights alongside the other pieces of theatre I saw this year.

Jingle bell time is a swell time to see a special performance from the cast of Chicago! Four of the men from the show's Mexico production took to the stage for a razzle dazzling Spanish version of 'Jingle Bell Rock' to celebrate the holiday season. Check it out with the video!

Tony Award-winner and opera star Paulo Szot will join the Broadway production of Chicago in the role of a?oeBilly Flynna?? at the Ambassador Theatre (219 W. 49th St.).

We're heading to the Pridelands to get a behind-the-scenes look at the three hyenas of Disney's smash hit musical The Lion King: James Brown-Orleans (Banzai), Enrique Segura (Ed), and Bonita Hamilton (Shenzi) as the trio celebrates 5000 performances together on Broadway. Check it out with this video!

The Fred Ebb Foundation (Mitchell S. Bernard, Trustee) in association with the Roundabout Theatre Company (Todd Haimes, Artistic Director) presented the fifteenth annual Fred Ebb Award for aspiring musical theatre songwriters to Angela Sclafani & Benjamin Velez. The award, named in honor of the late award-winning lyricist Fred Ebb, was presented by Kate Baldwin on Monday, December 2nd from 6-8pm at a by-invitation-only ceremony in the Penthouse Lounge of The American Airlines Theater.
