Ruthless! THE MUSICAL originally opened Off-Broadway in 1992, created as an over-the-top dark comedy spoof of the films The Bad Seed and All About Eve, and well-known Broadway musicals Gypsy and Annie. Similar to the dark comedy in musicals such as Little Shop of Horrors and Sweeney Todd where characters are murdered and then eaten, Ruthless! THE MUSICAL centers on 8-year old Tina Denmark, who knows she was born to play the lead in her school's third grade show and will do anything to win the part. And I do mean anything. Now onstage at Theatre Palisades, directed by Alta Abbott who first fell in love with the show during its 1993 West Coast premiere at the Canon Theatre in Beverly Hills, I can only say that the over-the-top production sometimes seemed so dark that the comedy became invisible.

The Hollywood Museum made history this week by unveiling three exhibits simultaneously, including THE BATMAN 80TH ANNIVERSARY, THE CATWOMEN, THE BIONIC WOMAN AND & THE SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN EXHIBITS.
Off-Broadway's Ruthless! THE MUSICAL concluded its run last Saturday, September 10th. Following the sold-out final performance, the Entire company partied into the wee hours at Philippe. Ruthless! opened July 13, 2015.
The Off-Broadway smash, Ruthless! The Musical, marked its one-year anniversary on July 13th and the cast celebrated into the wee hours at Becco. Ruthless! opened July 13, 2015 to unanimous rave reviews led by Rex Reed who called the show, 'Malicious & Delicious...A Total Joy!' Just some of the celebrities who have been spotted in the audience so far include Ron Howard, Regis & Joy Philbin, Bernadette Peters, Lynn Cohen, Chelsie Hightower, Mario Cantone, Dmitry Chaplin, Laura Bell Bundy, Barbara Eden, Jan Maxwell, Legacy, Larry Thomas (The Soup Nazi), Jackie Hoffman, Sierra Boggess, and Dame Gillian Lynne. The original cast recording, produced by Robert Sher, is set for release later this summer.
Sylvia St. Croix (as played by the fabulous Paul Pecorino in Ruthless!), is preparing for this year's Gay Pride festivities on Sunday. Earlier this week she brought Marcel, her newest fancy man, over to St. Luke's Theatre to show him off to her fellow cast members. Although she won't be walking the parade route (too rough on her bunions), Sylvia & Marcel will be hanging around the West Village, most likely near any booths offering food. Sylvia is widely known for her frequent eating binges (and subsequent purging).
The stars of Off-Broadway's award-winning musical smash Ruthless!, Kim Maresca and Tori Murray, performed songs from the show at the May 25th launch party celebrating the special June travel issue of W42ST Magazine. Here they are wowing the crowd at Hudson Boulevard Park accompanied by the great Marvin Laird.
The fabulous Rita McKenzie, star of the award-winning musical smash Ruthless!, recently attended a pre-Tony bash thrown by the HAMILTON company. Here she is celebrating their whopping 16 nominations with the cast and creative team at the IAC Building.
That diabolical eight-year-old Tina Denmark (as played by Tori Murray in Ruthless!) has again been seen stalking the Theatre District. This week she stopped by SHUFFLE ALONG to congratulate the producers on their 10 Tony nominations as well as their recent big Drama Critics' Circle prize. Undaunted after being told that the producers don't actually live at the theatre, the opportunistic little b*tch posed for this photo showing off her terpsichorean skills. It's no secret that Tina will do anything to land in a hit Broadway show...ANYTHING!
In this recent disturbing photo, Tina Denmark (as played by 11-year-old Tori Murray in Ruthless!) is seen loitering in front of Broadway's AMERICAN PSYCHO. From her expression, she appears highly displeased with this new, potential competition for the theatre season's favorite serial killer.
11-year-old Tori Murray, the young star of Off-Broadway's musical smash Ruthless!, performed at the fifth annual 'Night of Dreams' holiday gala in Bryant Park on November 30th presented by the Broadway Dreams Foundation. Broadway's brightest stars and patrons of the arts joined together for a festive celebration of the country's premier musical theatre training program. Tori wowed the assembled guests with a rousing rendition of 'You Raise Me Up,' along with Quentin Earl Darrington (RAGTIME) and Broadway Dreams student Isabella Gottfried.
Paul Pecorino, currently starring in the Off-Broadway smash Ruthless! THE MUSICAL, was a special celebrity presenter at the 17th Annual Glam Awards on November 18th, where he appeared as his imperious (and uber glam) Ruthless! character, Sylvia St. Croix. The Glam Awards, hosted by Bianca Del Rio, honor the brightest stars in NYC gay nightlife and over 400 guests were in attendance.
Tori Murray, the young star of Off-Broadway's smash hit musical Ruthless!, recently attended the 17th annual Nickelodeon HALO Awards at Pier 36 in New York City. The HALO Awards honor teens that are making a difference and Justin Bieber was this year's recipient of the first ever HALO Hall of Fame Award for his work with Make-A-Wish. The awards will be broadcast November 29th at 8 PM on Nickelodeon, TVLand and CMT. Scroll down for photo of Murray at the ceremony!
Laura Bell Bundy, star of the original production of Ruthless!, checked out the new production this past Thursday, September 17th. Bundy played the lethally talented 8-year-old, Tina Denmark, in the original 1992 Off-Broadway production. Her two understudies during that yearlong run also did well for themselves in the intervening years; Britney Spears and Natalie Portman. Bundy was the first to lead the standing ovation at the end of Thursday's performance. Scroll down for photos!
Joel Paley has earned accolades for over two decades with Ruthless! The Musical, for which he wrote the award-winning book and lyrics. He also directed the original 1992 production at the Player's Theatre, as well as in L.A., South Beach, the record-breaking concert event starring Bernadette Peters, and the current smash Off-Broadway production at St. Luke's Theatre. If that isn't enough, Paley is also starring in the show this week as the 8-year-old murderous, uber-talented Tina Denmark. The role is normally played by Tori Murray who is taking a brief, well-deserved vacation as she prepares to enter sixth grade next week. She's set to return to the role tomorrow, and Joel Paley will offer audiences his showstopping take on the role one more time tonight at 7 PM. When asked why the 59-year-old Paley was interested in stepping into this seemingly impossible assignment, he merely shrugged and explained, 'The show must go on.' Scroll down for photos!

In the beginning, Touchstone released a 1992 comedy starring Whoopi Goldberg. And Touchstone saw the profits and they were good . And Touchstone said, 'Let there be a sequel,' and there was a sequel. And Touchstone called the sequel 'Back in the Habit' . . . and so on. Now, twenty-one years later, Deloris Van Cartier, aspiring diva thrust into a convent for witness protection has come to the Memphis Orpheum.

Those of us well versed in Broadway musicals and Hollywood films will certainly catch lots of references in Ruthless! And with its off-the-wall, farcical humor and schmaltzy songs, this musical comedy will definitely have you laughing in the aisles!
