Return to the Forbidden Planet - 1989 - West End

Like past New Line shows Urinetown and Bat Boy, this is one of the silliest shows about important things St. Louis has ever seen -- like a crazy cocktail of Rocky Horror and Star Trek -- and we know audiences will have a blast sharing this smart, subversive piece of rock theatre with us.

Ever feel like our world is getting more dangerous every day? Like technology is advancing faster than our ability to control it? If so, you're not alone. So come back to the future with us! The future of the 1950s, that is, when the atomic bomb had everyone scared of Mad Scientists and the ever lurking dangers of Science Run Amok. Fear was one of the main staples of 1950s sci-fi -- fear of science, fear of sex, fear of the Russians, fear of The Bomb. It was a time when the most innocent lab experiments could result in giant monster bugs and mutated humans... or so the movies told us... And the only thing Americans feared more than Russia and the atom was rock and roll...

The musical is a send-up of the cult classic movie and other sci-fi films and TV shows of the 1950s, melded with plot elements from "The Tempest" along with dialogue bits from multiple Shakespeare plays. That was part of the fun for me, catching so many Shakespearean quotes perfectly placed in the dialogue of Bob Carlton's musical set on a spaceship sometime in the future, featuring a galaxy of 1950's and 1960's rock and roll classics including "Wipeout," "Good Vibrations," "Great Balls of Fire," "All Shook Up," "Monster Mash" and "We Gotta Get Out of this Place." And what an outrageously fabulous band under the musical direction of Trevor Wheetman and Omar D. Brancato, both of whom rocked the house on guitars while believably playing Ensign crew members onstage.

The month marks the start of my 7th year as a reviewer for Broadway World Los Angeles. With awards season in full bloom each January, many people ask me what my favorite shows were for the previous year. Since I see 3-5 shows per week, that is a difficult and time-consuming task for me to accomplish. But for 2018, I decided to go back through all the 188 reviews/articles I wrote for every show I saw and selected my top shows month-by-month. And what fun it was to go back and select one photo from each of the top 39 shows I selected.
