From Friday, February 22 through Sunday, March 3, BAM presents Living with the Dead: The Films of George A. Romero, a career-spanning retrospective-the first since his death-exploring independent trailblazer Romero (1940-2017) and his use of the horror genre to explore the darkness and paranoia of contemporary America. After ushering in a new era in independent and horror filmmaking with 1968's groundbreaking Night of the Living Dead, Romero embarked on a singular, influential four-decade career, imbuing his all-American nightmares with satiric and deadly serious commentaries on issues like race, capitalism, militarism, and government mistrust. In Romero's films, the monsters are not the other-they are us.

With a terrific cast, led by the humorous Israeli TV and film star, Yehezkel Lazarov, this production made me think, made me ask newer and more interesting questions, and, oh, those gloriously memorable songs, the humor, the love stories. For me, Fiddler on the Roof remains perched firmly at the top.

I have been a huge fan of both Wil Love and Carl Schurr for many years. They are currently both performing in Everyman Theatre's THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST which ends its run Dec. 30, 2018. They have become two patriarchs of the Baltimore theatre scene. Since their meeting at Center Stage in 1971, they have performed, produced, and adapted hundreds of performances both regionally and nationally. Now in their 10th year as Resident Company Members at Everyman Theatre, Wil and Carl have plenty of war stories and advice to share. I connected with these two venerable performances to learn more about their story.

UCSB's Department of Theater and Dance presents our 2018 Fall Dance Concert, ORIGIN/EVOLUTION. The evening will present six pieces in total, Poetry of a Mute Soul, Coloratisse, Anemone, The Unsung, Re-lll, and Memory of Hope including choreography from Jose Limon, Shen Wei, Valerie Huston, Monique Meunier, Kelly O'Connor, Christopher Pilafian, and performances from Principle Dancers of the New York City Ballet, Maria Kowroski and Tyler Angle. Foregrounding faculty research, this evening of dance offers premieres of new works and reconstructions by new and established faculty members, a cherished member of the emeritus dance faculty, and a senior BFA capstone project. The very makeup of the concert's contributors, the range of works being presented, and the varied positions of its creative artist call up notions of artistic lineage and histories. Drawing forth from unique origins - how we came to dance - each of us evolves and grows, standing on the shoulder of those who came before. Our storied faculty members provide a bridge between the originators and the next generation of student-dancer artists.

Joni Mitchell, master songsmith and storyteller, eight-time Grammy winner and folk music pioneer is the inspiration for  JONI, Morrison Hotel Gallery's upcoming photography exhibit and sale opening on Friday, November 16th   at the Sunset Marquis Hotel location in Los Angeles, the New York City gallery on Prince Street in SoHo and the gallery in Maui at Mick Fleetwood's General Store and restaurant. The exhibit will be up through December 10th.

Performing with his band in Folsom, the concert will include songs we all know and love, from across his storied career. Theatre for a New Audience (TFANA; Jeffrey Horowitz, Founding Artistic Director) presents the New York Premiere of C.I.C.T. - Theatre du Bouffes du Nord's The Prisoner, continuing Peter Brook's 40-year-long collaboration with playwright/director Marie-Helene Estienne.  

Suave and debonair, a gangster saunters onto the stage, sizes up his audience, and the tale of the story of how the mob helped to make Las Vegas bursts into the showroom. Along with commentary about the life of "The Prince of the Mafia" Michael Franzese, John 'Handsome Johnny' Roselli is captured by one of the leads-narrator and storyteller Marcel Forestieri. A cautionary tale with an ending of redemption, A Mob Story combines song and dance with recounting this fascinating story at the Plaza Showroom in the Plaza Las Vegas.

The 62nd BFI London Film Festival in partnership with American Express® today announces its full programme, featuring a diverse selection of 225 feature films from both established and emerging talent. This 12-day celebration of cinema illustrates the richness of international filmmaking, with films to delight and entertain audiences, and also films that probe and interrogate issues of significance.

Kodo -- the world's most celebrated professional taiko company -- will present their program Evolution in North America for the first time, visiting 27 cities in the U.S. and Canada between January and March 2019.  Evolution invites audiences to step into the world of Kodo, created by their past, their present, and their dedication to the future of taiko performing arts. Blasting off the festival in its 14th year will be the U.S. Premiere of David Gordon Green's razor-sharp new contribution to the HALLOWEEN canon with legendary actor Jamie Lee Curtis—along with HALLOWEEN producers Malek Akkad, Jason Blum and Bill Block in attendance! Curtis returns to her iconic role as Laurie Strode, who comes to her final confrontation with Michael Myers, the masked figure who has haunted her since she narrowly escaped his killing spree on Halloween night four decades ago.

REDCAT, CalArts' downtown center for contemporary arts, announces adventurous international and LA performances featured in the ambitious new Fall 2018 season at REDCAT, including stunning stagecraft and object theater from Rotterdam, the world premiere of a new dance and video work by LA company David Rousseve/Reality, a slyly funny and poignant collaboration by German/British collective Gob Squad with six LA performers, a hilarious political musical-theater project by art collective My Barbarian, and the return of Christiane Jatahy with a Brazilian take on Chekhov's Three Sisters, which uses genius film techniques.

The international movement and entertainment company, Pilobolus (Executive Producer, Itamar Kubovy; Renee Jaworski and Matt Kent, artistic directors), kicks-off its first ever Pilobolus Five Senses Festival this weekend. Theater for the New City's award-winning Street Theater Company will open its 42nd annual tour August 4 with 'SHAME! Or The Doomsday Machine,' a rip-roaring musical in which the Theory of Relativity explains modern politics. Free performances will tour closed-off streets, parks and playgrounds throughout the five boroughs until September 16. Book, lyrics and direction are by Crystal Field; the musical score is composed and arranged by Joseph Vernon Banks. (Schedule follows at bottom of this document.)

The Bronx Museum of the Arts announced today that Deborah Cullen-Morales will become the Museum's new Executive Director. She will succeed Executive Director Holly Block, who passed away in October 2017. Cullen-Morales comes to the Museum from the Miriam and Ira D. Wallach Art Gallery at Columbia University. After serving more than 15 years at El Museo del Barrio, New York, Cullen-Morales has been the director and chief curator of the Wallach for the past six years, overseeing the Gallery's expansion into The Lenfest Center for the Arts on the University's new campus in West Harlem. Cullen-Morales will report to the Board of Trustees and will be the strategic lead in developing and implementing plans for advancing the Museum's mission. She will assume the post at the Museum in July 2018.

Last summer, Columbus theatre-lovers flew to New York to see Springer favorite Michael Stiggers make his Broadway debut in Beautiful: The Carole King Musical.  There was a cheering crowd waiting outside the stage door, then dinner, toasts and speeches at Sardi's Restaurant.
