Dear Readers, today I want to talk to you about one of the most exciting companies in town and their latest show, The Williams Project's 'A Bright Room Called Day' by Tony Kushner. Specifically, I want to focus on three aspects of why they and their current show are so exciting and by the end I expect one if not all three aspects will entice you to catch this one, or at least I hope so.

The Round Barn Theatre first produced "Annie" in 1996, its first year of repertory theatre. Nine year old Sarajane Morse Mullins captured the hearts of that first year's audience as the world's most famous redhead. Now twenty-two years later, Sarajane returns as Miss Hannigan on the same stage she began her professional career. Annie's red dress has been passed to Maddi Reese Ames, the next generation of budding starlets. It promises to be a special homecoming and debut for the two actresses and audiences.

THE BITTER GAME,  a 'high-impact' immersive theater experience ripe with pain, poetry, and laughter that explores the experience of being black in America, debuts at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts on Wednesday, November 14 through Saturday, November 17, 2018, outdoors on The Wallis' Promenade Terrace.

On Today, October 19, 2018 at 8:00pm, Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center (BMCM+AC) presents a performance by Jace Clayton aka DJ /rupture in conjunction with the African Americans in WNC & Southern Appalachia Conference. The event features Clayton's latest video The Jacob Lawrence of Jacob Lawrence, a hand-drawn animation with texts that form part of the script for the live performance, inspired by BMCM+AC's landmark exhibition Between Form and Content: Perspectives on Jacob Lawrence.

San Francisco Opera presents Richard Strauss' Arabella in five performances at the War Memorial Opera House from October 16 through November 3. Last performed by the Company 20 years ago, Arabella returns in Tim Albery's acclaimed production with leading Strauss interpreter Marc Albrecht, making his United States opera debut on the podium. The cast features soprano Ellie Dehn performing the title role for the first time, baritone Brian Mulligan in his role debut as Mandryka, soprano Heidi Stober as Zdenka, tenor Daniel Johansson in his first San Francisco Opera engagement as Matteo and Hye Jung Lee as the Fiakermilli. Company Chorus Director Ian Robertson prepares the San Francisco Opera Chorus.

Target Margin Theater (Founding Artistic Director David Herskovits, Associate Artistic Director Moe Yousuf) will present the world premiere or Lisa Clair's The Making of King Kong, a subversive dark comedy that reimagines the making of the classic 1933 film King Kong. Directed by Eugene Ma (The Baltimore Waltz, Oregon Shakespeare Festival; Moliere's The Imaginary Invalid, CSV Cultural Center), The Making of King Kong is a theatrical journey into the cultural monster behind the myth. The play takes a brutal look at America's history of white patriarchy, imperialism, and sexism through the eyes of original King Kong creators Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack, and Hollywood starlet Fay Wray.

The coffeehouse meets the cabaret, as poets and performers attempt to stave off their Seasonal Affective Disorder today, October 12, in 'Poetry/Cabaret: STRANGE' at The Green Room 42. Curated and hosted by Thomas March, author of the newly-released collection Aftermath, the 'Poetry/Cabaret' series unites poets and performers in an evening of wild variations on a theme.

Jeremy Lawrence, best-known for creating and starring in several one-man shows which explore Tennessee Williams in the playwright's own words, revives his acclaimed play with music 'LAVENDER SONGS: A QUEER WEIMAR BERLIN CABARET' which features songs performed or written by queer and Jewish kabarettists of the era in English versions by Jeremy Lawrence. Lawrence, as his alter ego Tante Fritzi, invites the audience into his edgy, gender-bender, sexy world. It is a chilling evocation of the subversive world of Berlin's cabarets and a celebration of the daring of its Jewish and queer artists who continued to mock and deride the ever-lengthening shadow of fascism for as long as they could. 'Lavender Songs,' directed by Jason Jacobs, stars Jeremy Lawrence as 'Tante Fritzi' with Ariela Bohrod at the piano. Jacob Jonas The Company, currently celebrating its fifth season, returns to the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts as 2018/2019 Company-In-Residence with an intimate studio show comprised entirely of world premiere works from Wednesday, October 24 through Saturday, October 27, 2018, 8 pm, in the Lovelace Studio Theater. For the first time in The Company's history, it has commissioned works by guest choreographers, with the show featuring the world premieres of 'Unknown Territories' by Donald Byrd, Bessie award-winner and Tony-nominated choreographer who is company founder Jacob Jonas' mentor; 'Cupido' by Latino choreographer Omar Roman de Jesus; 'Transfer' and 'Make A Toast' by Jonas; and 'Crash,' also by Jonas with original composition and live music by Okaidja Afroso, a noted Afro-pop singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Ghana, West Africa. Look out, Atlanta! There's a new musical theatre hotspot in town! The City Springs Theatre Company opened its inaugural season in the Byers Theatre at City Springs Civic Center over the weekend with a razzle-dazzle production of the fluffy 1980 tuner 42nd Street, adapted from the Bradford Ropes novel and the subsequent 1933 film of the same name. The lavishly staged production, featuring Tony Award Winner Shuler Hensley, who also serves as the Associate Artistic Director for the new company, and Atlanta favorite Deborah Bowman at her best, is a bonafide triumph for director Brandt Blocker. It's well-acted. It's well-sung. And… those dancing feet. Oh, those dancing feet!

Classic Stage Company will begin its 2018-2019 season with an unsettlingly timeless work: Bertolt Brecht's allegorical depiction of the rise of fascism, The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui. Today CSC announced that four-time Tony Award nominee and Law and Order: SVU alum Raul Esparza will star as the Al Capone-like, Hitler-paralleling Arturo Ui in this production.
