The Utah Symphony Masterworks series' first performances of 2020 kick off on January 3-4 with Utah Symphony Associate Conductor Conner Gray Covington returning to the podium following his acclaimed early debut in November and the first of many celebrations of the 250th anniversary of Beethoven's birth. On January 9-11 one of the greatest living mezzo-sopranos, Isabel Leonard along with conductor Bernard Labadie will join Utah Symphony for an evening of highlights from Mozart's operatic and concert catalogue. Highlights for the performances include Beethoven's 'Leonore' Overture No. 3 and Debussy's 'La mer' on January 3-4, and three pieces from Mozart's 'The Marriage of Figaro' on January 9-11. A Christmas Story, based on the popular 1983 movie of the same title, comes to the Morrison Center for a limited engagement as the second show of the 2019-2020 season. Set in Indiana in the 1940s, we see a simpler time, unpolluted by the violent and somewhat fearful ways of the 21st century. The Morrison Center did a fantastic job setting the stage for a beautiful scene of family, friends, and the frenzy that often happens during the Holidays. While waiting to go into the theatre, I noticed children were there with parents and older couples enjoying date night. There was a happy buzz circulating throughout the theatre; The feeling was contagious and simply put, welcoming. There aren't many musicals that resonate the feeling of community, this one definitely had it.

Super Woman Luba Mason is breaking out with a return of her one-woman musical cabaret, a new cd and a return to Broadway. It's About Time.

On October 24th through the 27th, MADCAP Comedy and Improv Troupe presented the John Bishop farce The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940 at Newman University's Jabara Flexible Theatre. Under executive artistic director Cameron Carlson and wife Lana, the show was a night of pre-war, German societal commentary and comedy amid a mysterious murder mystery in a Chappaqua, New York City mansion setting. Starring Vonda Newby-Schuster, Mark Barlow, Mary Lou Phipps-Winfrey, Crystal Meek, and Steve Dunn among many others, the show was a perfect selection for tying into their previous show Hounds of Baskerville and for what was Halloween weekend in Wichita.

A frothy holiday confection playing out in Hollywood inspired Technicolor-come-to-life is the best way to describe the Shaw Festival's jubilant production of Irving Berlin's HOLIDAY INN now onstage at their Festival Theatre. Based on the 1942 movie of the same name starring Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire, HOLIDAY INN has been overshadowed a bit by the later Berlin hit WHITE CHRISTMAS. But thanks to some crackerjack casting and a huge budget, The Shaw has breathed new life into the 2014 stage version written by Gordon Greenberg and Chad Hodge.

Holiday Inn is a catchy, tuneful way to end the year.
