On Wednesday, May 16, The ASCAP Foundation and The Library of Congress will jointly present the 10th annual “We Write the Songs” event at the historic Coolidge Auditorium in The Library of Congress in Washington, DC. Millbrook Playhouse (David E. Theater at Monmouth continues its long-standing tradition of providing access to arts education for young people in Maine with its annual Page to Stage tour. TAM has provided literature-based education programs in schools and community centers since the Theater's founding. Education Tours make adaptations of classic literature accessible to a geographically and economically diverse audience. "The live performance is something students don't see often anymore," said 4th grade teacher Pamela Prescott of Belgrade Central School. "[Attending a] performance of classic literature is a great connector to the classroom." Jolene Libby, 1st grade teacher at Turner Primary School said, "I believe it to be a real and authentic experience that students might not experience otherwise."

Thousands of people attended the Garden State Film Festival's much-anticipated homecoming in Asbury Park March 22-25, 2018. The spectacular four-day weekend event welcomed over 26,000 celebrities, honorees, film industry execs and movie fans to multiple iconic venues throughout Asbury Park. The Festival included networking opportunities, industry workshops, informative panel discussions, open talent casting call, live screenplay reading, star-studded red carpet gala and entertaining parties - all in addition to the screenings of 246 films from 22 countries around the world. The weekend culminated with the 2018 Garden State Film Festival Awards Gala Dinner event on Sunday evening, where this year's honorees were recognized and Festival winners were announced.

Aspen Santa Fe Ballet (ASFB) celebrates the third year of its four-year residency at the Younes and Soraya Nazarian Center for the performing arts (The Soraya) with a program of works that celebrates the company's commitment to creating new contemporary dance on Saturday, April 7 at 8:00pm. ASFB will perform the new work Half/Cut/Split by world-renowned Finnish choreographer Jorma Elo, as well as Where We Left Off (2011) commissioned by ASFB and choreographed by Nicolo Fonte, and Return to a Strange Land (1975) from Ji?i Kylian, Artistic Director of Nederlands Dans Theater with music by Leoš Jana?ek.   

When I saw the Menier Chocolate Factory's production of Travesties on the West End last spring, I was stunned. Director Patrick Marber had captured Tom Stoppard's sprawling, absurdist epic with a captivating electricity that I had never before seen. Embracing the full power of Stoppard's explosively theatrical dive into the past, Patrick harnessed every bit of the play's sharp hilarity, keen topicality, and, most of all, boundless thrill. I knew that I needed to make Marber's triumphant and endlessly entertaining production part of our 2018-2019 season and give Travesties its first-ever Broadway revival since its 1975 debut, which won the Tony Award® for Best Play. A vortex of caricatural historical figures, clashing political philosophies, and radical artistic movements, Stoppard's early masterwork dismantles just about every convention of the Western stage and reassembles their parts into an entirely original theatrical machine. There's no simple narrative thread in this play, no strict adherence to the laws of our physical world, no clear divide between fact and fiction -- and no end to the tenets of artistic tradition that this whirlwind of a comedy deconstructs.

Two-time Tony Award winner Christine Ebersole will take the stage as a last-minute replacement for Laura Benanti at Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts on Saturday, March 17, at 8 p.m., when she and pianist/commentator Seth Rudetsky perform songs from the great musicals.

The Coalition of Broadway Unions and Guilds (COBUG) on Wednesday elected Laura Penn of Stage Directors and Choreographers Society(SDC) and D. Joseph Hartnett of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) to be Co-Chairs. They replace longtime Chair Anthony DePaulo of IATSE, who is retiring this week. The Miles Electric Band, a progressive, All-Star ensemble of Miles Davis alumni who are revising the framework for modern jazz improvisation, will perform at the Younes and Soraya Nazarian Center for the Performing Arts (The Soraya) on Thursday, March 1 at 8:00pm.  The avant-garde collective revisits repertoire from Davis' electric period (1968 - 1975) in paying homage to The Chief.  The band represents two generations of players: Davis' contemporaries and the next generation.
