Regardless of whether or not you're a fan of musicals, you've probably heard of Miss Saigon. This world-famous Broadway classic is coming to East Lansing's Wharton Center for the Performing Arts for just one week from March 12th through 17th. Featuring music and a book from Les Miserables playwrights Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schonberg, as well as additional lyrics from Richard Maltby, Jr., Miss Saigon is a story of love and survival towards the end of the Vietnam War. After opening on the West End in 1989, Miss Saigon played to packed houses on Broadway from April 11, 1991 to January 28, 2001. There are few entertainments as popular as Miss Saigon (36 million attendees worldwide since it premiered on London's West End in 1989), and few that have occasioned as much controversy. Despite all that popularity, this reviewer had happened never to see the show until the current national tour surfaced this last week at Washington's Kennedy Center. Miss Saigon's reputation for controversy had preceded it, however, and I was on the lookout for offensiveness. But what I saw was a well-honed crowd pleaser with spectacular stagecraft and spectacle, excellent singing, a few catchy tunes, and a compelling plot. Some of the provocations complained of in earlier productions are no longer in evidence. In other instances, I would dispute that the material was ever objectively offensive. I'll discuss all this below, but first, some basics.

Not many people know the name Claude-Michel Schonberg, but everybody knows his music: as the composer of Les Miserables and Miss Saigon, Claude-Michel is present in everyone's playlist, in a songbook on everyone's piano, and in every karaoke lineup.
