The 72nd Annual Tony Awards are this Sunday June 10th at 8/9c hosted by Josh Groban and Sara Bareilles. Playwright, librettist, scriptwriter and outspoken LGBTQ activist Terrence McNally has long believed in the power of the arts to transform society and make a difference. The new documentary American Masters - Terrence McNally: Every Act of Life, premiering nationwide Friday, June 14 at 9 p.m. on PBS (check local listings),pbs.org/americanmasters and the PBS Video app in honor of LGBT Pride Month, lifts the curtain on the life, career and inspirations of the complicated and brilliant Emmy- and four-time Tony Award-winning writer.

The American Film Institute (AFI) announced today the first wave of guest presenters who will celebrate Denzel Washington at the 47th AFI Life Achievement Award on June 6, 2019, at a Gala Tribute in Los Angeles. Chadwick Boseman, Jodie Foster, Jamie Foxx, Morgan Freeman (2011 honoree), Michael B. Jordan, Issa Rae, Julia Roberts and Cicely Tyson will all be in attendance to pay tribute to Washington's life and work. In addition, multitalented film, television and music video artist Melina Matsoukas (AFI Class of 2005) will receive the 2019 Franklin J. Schaffner Alumni Medal, recognizing her extraordinary creative talents.  

The annual Broadway League Awards, honoring excellence and achievement for Touring Broadway, were announced today during the Broadway League's 2019 Spring Road Conference. First presented in 1992, the Broadway League Awards recognize the contributions of those who have displayed exemplary service to the Broadway industry and are considered innovators of their craft.

10 Hairy Legs, the male repertory dance company, will hold its first Live Streaming Event on Friday, May 17 from 3:00 - 5:00 pm to launch The 10HL Choreographic Initiative to raise $100,000 during the coming year. The Initiative will fund our overarching commitment to commissioning 10 choreographers in the next 5 years. The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra is pleased to announce the appointment Shantanique Moore, flutist, as the next recipient of the symphony's two-year fellowship designed to enable one young African American musician the ability to dedicate him or herself to the pursuit of an orchestral career. Ms. Moore will be the eighth recipient of a fellowship from the symphony's EQT Orchestra Training Program for African American Musicians (OTPAAM).

Two years ago, lying on a couch in the #9 Lounge at the Evening Star Cafe in Alexandria, VA, I was eulogized. I had watched other audience members receive secret family recipes, help rehearse a marriage proposal, even destroy a speed limit sign with a hammer. But the card I drew was Death. So, naturally, I was eulogized in front of the rest of the audience. The thing my funeral had in common with all these other short vignettes was the sense that, without my involvement, none of this could happen. I mattered. When it was done, I opened my eyes, took the flower offered to me, and found my seat. The oration was by Quill Nebeker, my Medium for the evening.

Williams (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., numerous productions with Elephant Theatre Company) as Stanley Kowalski in a visiting production at the Odyssey Theatre presented by Dance On Productions in association with Linda Toliver and Gary Guidinger. Passions flare and cultures collide in the sultry streets of New Orleans beginning May 25, with performances continuing though July 7.

The Marsh San Francisco announces additional performances of Not a Genuine Black Man, the longest running solo show in San Francisco theater history by award-winning actor, playwright, and talk show host Brian Copeland. This funny, honest, and harrowing piece recounts the struggles Copeland faced growing up in what was declared one of the most racist suburbs in America.

The Board of Directors of The Music Center announced the appointment of two esteemed members of the Los Angeles business community to The Music Center Board.  They include Charles "Chuck" F. Adams, partner, Goldman Sachs; and Stefanie Kane, Southwest market managing partner, PwC.  Adams and Kane join an increasingly diverse group of Los Angeles' business and community leaders who provide guidance and support to the multi-faceted performing arts organization.  The Music Center manages The Music Center's four theatres, an outdoor plaza and Grand Park on behalf of the County of Los Angeles through its Operations division, The Music Center Ops (TMC Ops), and produces and presents programming with a focus on engagement through its artistic division, The Music Center Arts (TMC Arts).

At the El Portal Theatre this May the Troubies return to their roots and take a stab at Shakespeare's perilous historical tragedy Julius Caesar to the music of cult L.A. rock band Weezer.  It could get bloody in NoHo as the Ovation Award winning, Los Angeles-based Troubadour Theater Company presents Julius Weezer, a musical parody directed and adapted by the company's Master of Mayhem and Artistic Director Matt Walker.

He's back! According to Variety, James Corden is set to return as host of the 73rd Annual Tony Awards on June 9, 2019. Corden last hosted the ceremony in 2016.

A homage to major composers including Richard Wagner, Philip Glass, and Louis Andriessen, an ode to power women such as Harriet Tubman and Sylvia Plath, dozens of pioneering makers and young talent plus a brand-new edition of GALA! The League of Chicago Theatres, Goodman Theatre, the University of Illinois at Chicago and competition organizer Derrick Sanders announce the top Chicago finalists for the 10th Annual August Wilson Monologue Competition, which were held Monday, March 4, 2019 at the Goodman Theatre: Abad Viquez of Nicholas Senn High School (first place), Freedom Martin of The Chicago High School for the Performing Arts (second place), Serenity Saffold-Rice of Interlochen Center for the Arts (third place), and Lyk Singleton of The Chicago High School for the Performing Arts (honorable mention).

Sean Daniels, who in his youth was inspired toward a career in theatre after attending Arizona Theatre Company productions with his Mesa-based family, has come full circle by being named ATC's new Artistic Director.

Twenty-two Chicago high school students will compete in the finals of the 10th Annual August Wilson Monologue Competition for a chance to represent Chicago in the National Competition at the August Wilson Theatre in New York City.  Hundreds of students competed across the city in preliminary rounds. The finals will be held at the Goodman Theatre, 170 N Dearborn on Monday, March 4, 2019 at 6:00 pm. The August Wilson Monologue Competition is free and open to the public. Brooklyn Music School (BMS) presents the 6th Annual Middle School Jazz Festival today, March 2, 2019 from 12pm to 6:30pm, with a concert at 4:30pm, followed by a jam session with students, faculty, and guest artist. BMS is located at 126 Saint Felix Street, Brooklyn. Concert tickets are a $10 suggested donation.
