John Vanderslice's anticipated new album The Cedars is out next week, and today the renowned producer/songwriter shared an advance stream of the full record with The Fader. Vanderslice also gave a revealing interview with the magazine, speaking of his childhood in rural Florida, his despair over his mother's death, his disillusionment with San Francisco, and his relationship with drugs. 'There's stuff on the record that I'm talking about very transparently because I want everyone to know what's happening with me,' he says. 'It's like a bleak, dark, beautiful Christmas card.'

Six years ago today, the uplifting musical Hands on a Hardbody, based on a documentary of the same name, opened on Broadway featuring Broadway favorites like Keala Settle, Jay Armstrong Johnson, and Alison Case! John Vanderslice is set to release The Cedars, his first album in six years, on April 5. The record's blend of synthesizers, drum machines, and Vanderslice's unmistakable vocals has already been receiving praise from NPR, Stereogum, and Consequence of Sound, among others, and today he shares another new song, 'Spectral Dawn.' Vanderslice describes the track as 'a hymn to those who have disappeared into the ether: the lost loves, the obsessions, the dead. They've slipped through a trap door and are not accessible anymore. The remaining fragments of experience and memory are comforting and damaging at the same time.' Brooklyn Vegan, who premiered the song today, call it 'both lush and intimate, full off all sorts of interesting sonic touches - woozy synthesizers, waves of electrical current and ticking percussion.'

The 2019 Tribeca Film Festival, presented by AT&T, today unveiled its feature film lineup. Continuing its tradition of elevating exceptional storytelling rooted in today's global film communities, the 18th annual Festival will showcase debut works from emerging talent and new works from notable filmmakers. The program includes discoveries, comedies, music-centered, political and social films. The 2019 Tribeca Film Festival takes place April 24 - May 5.  

John Vanderslice is returning with his first album in six years, The Cedars, due out April 5, and today he shared a new single, 'Will Call,' a song that he calls his biggest departure yet. Consequence of Sound premiered the track today, writing, 'this new track uses slightly off kilter electronic elements to create a feeling that teeters between grace and anxiety. With The Cedars inspired by the natural beauty of Vanderslice's land in Northern California, the slow pulsing sine waves rolling under scattered bells and keys translate the terrain into a hypnotic soundscape.' Vanderslice also shared his inspirations for the song, which include Sonoma and Los Angeles, and a couple of his current favorite artists, Spirit of the Beehive and JPEGMAFIA.

Oscar-qualifying New York Int'l Children's Film Festival announced the complete short film lineup for its 2019 event, which runs February 22-March 17 at theaters throughout New York: IFC Center, Scandinavia House, Quad Cinemas, SVA Theatre, Cinépolis Chelsea, Alamo Drafthouse and the Museum of the Moving Image. Established in 1997, the acclaimed Festival is the nation's largest for children and teens and will present new animated, live action, documentary and experimental shorts and features from 37 countries. Chicago announced today that actress Veronica Dunne will return to the Broadway production in the role of "Roxie Hart" beginning Tuesday, February 12. She will play a 6-week limited engagement at the Ambassador Theatre (219 W. 49th St.) through Sunday, March 24, 2019.

The Chan Centre for the Performing Arts at the University of British Columbia presents the dazzling multimedia work No Blue Memories: The Life of Gwendolyn Brooks on February 24, 2019, at 7pm in the Chan Shun Concert Hall as part of the Beyond Words series. The late poet was a radical and disruptive presence within the national literary scene, becoming the first African-American to win the Pulitzer Prize in 1950. In this ambitious creation, innovative art-collective Manual Cinema collaborates with Chicago-based poets Eve L. Ewing and Nate Marshall to craft an inspiring biographical narrative, featuring a live six-piece band and original score by Jamila Woods and Ayanna Woods.

Producer Stephen Gabriel/Work Light Productions released today a music video in anticipation of the 50th Anniversary North American tour of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's iconic musical Jesus Christ Superstar.  The Olivier Award-winning production first premiered in 2016 at Regent's Park Open Air Theatre in London.  The North American tour launches in Austin, TX in the fall of 2019 and celebrates fifty epic years since the original rock opera concept album release that began this musical theatre phenomenon.

Sundance Institute adds five feature films and a Special Event to the 2019 Sundance Film Festival's robust slate of independent work today, alongside announcing the winner of the 2019 Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film Prize, seven Day One films and the Closing Night Film. The Festival will take place in Park City, Salt Lake City and at Sundance Mountain Resort January 24-February 4, 2019.

Composer Heidi Rodewald, known for her collaborations with Stew on Passing Strange and The Total Bent, strikes out on her own in The Good Swimmer, a "pop requiem" that addresses issues of war, heroism, sacrifice, loss, and idealism. The moody, multi-layered song-cycle for guitar, bass, piano, trumpet, woodwinds, strings, drums, and vocals is performed by a nine-piece band led by singer David Driver. Set in the early days of the Vietnam War among a group of lifeguards, Donna Di Novelli's lyrics are a radical recontextualization of found texts, including a defunct lifesaving manual. A cast of young singers in their teens and early 20s at the start of their professional careers-Jeremy Weiss, Sophia Byrd, Naseer Sleets, Joey LaPlante, Luke Bob Robinson, Papa Holt, and Kennedy Kanagawa-vividly conveys the sense of young people being thrust into a historical moment they have no control of. Their shattering experience brings the audience to a galvanizing realization: we truly honor our fallen soldiers only when we defy the political drumbeat of a senseless war.  

Director Renee Robinson brings the Frank Wildhorn musical Jekyll & Hyde - based on Robert Louis Stevenson's iconic novella - to life at Murfreesboro's Center for the Arts, opening Friday, October 5 and continuing through October 21.
