Humor and satire can depend on bad news when this quirky tragicomedy looks into family care-taking, family hoarding, AA, OCD, ADHD, psoriasis, random impulse buying, popular writing disorders and other pandemic maladies of the day.' Tom RUffles states, 'I was transfixed with recognition since Outskirts Press published my fictional book about a family with ADHD problems a month ago. This fiction / general book includes psoriatic arthritis and the blessings of a rare liver disorder. BWW Blog: Broadway Tours - Bring Them Home!

National tours are a beautiful, wonderful thing. The rest of Canada may have productions stop by every so often, but it isn't enough! (more...)

BWW Review: QUEENS OF SYRIA, Young Vic, 7 July 2016
by Marianka Swain - Jul 7, 2016

Last night's Stuff Happens revival was concerned with warmongering men chasing glory from afar. Now we meet the women who suffer most from such conflict: 13 Syrian refugees, driven from their homeland. Their voices are seldom heard amidst the din, but thanks to Georgina Paget, Charlotte Eagar and William Stirling's drama therapy workshop, which grew into a fully-fledged performance and will tour nationally following its London run, those voices now ring out across the UK. BWW Review: DR. JOHN IN SAN DIEGO at Embarcadero Marina
by Ron Bierman - Jul 31, 2017

A worse-for-wear Dr. John walked slowly to the piano with the help of two canes. He was no quicker while leaving the stage at the end of the set. But for over an hour in between, he and his sextet kept up an infectious funky beat, and his voice and piano playing erased half a century of his 76 years. Listeners felt an irresistible urge to tap feet, sway rhythmically, and sometimes laugh at the lyrics of songs such as 'How Come My Dog Don't Bark (When You Come 'Round)?' sung in Dr. John's inimitable raspy growl. Contrary to the title of his biggest hit, it was 'Right Place Right Time.' (more...)

BWW Interview: Michael Fischer of THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE at Hillcrest Center For The Arts
by Cary Ginell - Jan 11, 2016

I haven't posted a story yet this year because I've been busy. For the past two weeks, I've been immersed in learning the flute part to the score of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, which concludes a brief four-day, five-show run this afternoon at the Hillcrest Center for the Arts. Spelling Bee is a great show for improv artists, and being in the pit for rehearsals and every show, I am able to see how the actors handle the show's free structure, which allows for improvisation. If you've seen the show, you know what I'm talking about. Spelling Bee is being staged by YA4Ever, the alumni group of Young Artists Ensemble. To help out on this show, writer/director Michael Fischer agreed to play the part of Vice Principal Douglas Panch, the contest's 'word pronouncer.' We talked to Michael after a particularly riotous Saturday matinee performance. (more...)

BWW Recap: Jay (and Phil and Luke) Suffer Separation Anxiety on MODERN FAMILY
by Matt Smith - Feb 5, 2015

Hey, all. Hope you enjoyed your short, mid-winter hiatus, and now the TV gods have rewarded our suffering by giving us a full month of new episodes! That's right, new episodes — one every week this month! Let the rejoicing begin! Here we go with the first one up: After Gloria (and the allergist) suspects Joe's allergic to Stella, she's sent away to live with Mitch and Cam for a week, much to Jay's chagrin. He's overly attached to the dog, and feels like he's lost her to Cam. (Some fantastic one-liners in their conversation while Cam's at the dog park, though they may not have had to do with the dog — haha!) Jay tries to win her back in several ways, one being the check-up in the aforementioned phone call, the other being a particularly hilarious scene where he cooks his baby a steak dinner — “You don't know what I'm competing with over there,. Cameron's wooing her with belly rubs, jewelry, kisses on the mouth…” See, I know Jay's over-affection for the dog (especially over his family) may seem a bit — nay, a lot — irrational, but Ed O'Neill plays this irrationality so well that you laugh at what he says rather than reprimand what he does. BWW Review: You've Got Us Sold with BUYER and CELLAR at the Provincetown Theater
by Kristen Morale - Aug 31, 2016

When a play like Buyer and Cellar is written, a show about aspiring actor Alex Moore who finds himself employed by Barbra Streisand to work in her basement mall, you actually become grateful that someone not only thought of such an amusing idea, but also managed to almost effortlessly turn it into some sort of ingenious production. When you see a single actor take the audience so willingly through the ins and outs of the most interesting job anyone will ever have, you have a feeling the show will be great. You have this sort of "how come I didn't think of that" moment, followed by moments of wondering how such an idea can possibly make its way to the stage. Give up thinking about it because you're not going to actually see the brilliance of Buyer and Cellar until you see it brought to life by the Peregrine Theatre Ensemble. (more...)
