"Our customers are always on the leading edge of the digital lifestyle", said Jay Yoo, company Founder and President, "they're using smart phone apps to store information like insurance data and shopping club memberships, making old fashioned paper and plastic cards utterly pointless. The Habit of Art is a wonderfully funny and deeply moving revival of Alan Bennett's fantastic 2009 follow up to The History Boys. The play focuses on a fictional meeting between WH Auden and Benjamin Britten in 1972, when Britten seeks out his old friend to combat his loneliness and ask advice about his new composition of Death in Venice. This meeting is framed as a play within a play where rehearsals are taking place; aged thesps Fitz and Henry play Auden and Britten respectively, musing on life, ageing, sex and art.

There was a live band of four playing Russian Folk Music to help set the mood: Anastasia Leonova on vocals/guitar, Gordon Reinhart on violin, Michael Baltzell on the balalaika, and Stitch Marker on guitar. It made for a wonderful transition into the world we were about to enter. They had a quality to them that could (almost should) be on CD.

If there's one thing that irritates me more than anything else it's someone else's therapy on stage. If it's wrapped up in an engaging story then I'm willing to overlook a lot but when it's just an author working out their issues for all to see, then don't waste my time. And while Annex Theatre's current show "The Strange Misadventures of Patty, Patty's Dad, Patty's Friend Jen, and a Whole Bunch of Other People" isn't completely camped out on the psychologists couch and has some really wonderful performances and moments, at times it felt a little forced and self indulgent.
