Whether from disease, 19th century #MeToo-style abuse, or unrequited love, Opera Philadelphia's (OP) Festival O18 opening weekend showed us three ways that central female characters lost their grip on reality. While I considered only one of them a total success, audience openness to sometimes-demanding material made it clear that the company has found a formula that strikes at the hearts of opera-goers, new and old.

As a follow-up to 2017's acclaimed Ballet: The Music of Michael Gibbs, Seattle-based trumpeter Cuong Vu joins forces once again with guitar great Bill Frisell, bassist Luke Bergman and drummer Ted Poor on the boundary-pushing quartet outing for RareNoiseRecords, Change in the Air. With all the members of the quartet contributing compositions, this one finds the four participants on equal footing on ten adventurous originals. From Poor's dreamy, noirish opener 'All That's Left of Me Is You' and his lonesome echo-laden waltz 'Alive' to Bergman's dynamic 'Must Concentrate,' Frisell's delicate 'Look, Listen' and his beguiling heartland melody 'Long Ago' and Vu's angular 'Round and Round' and his edgy and electrified 'March of the Owl and the Bat,' these four stellar musicians are truly on one accord and dealing with a rare level of nuance and depth of communication on Change in the Air.

Even after close to three decades of performing, sales of over 15 million records, twice being named as group of the year at the Juno awards, and a selection into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, Steven Page still feels he has to win his audience over at every show.

Dream-time, work-time, play-time, ceremony-time, time counted and time uncountable ... Time like a desert with sinuous lines unbroken; like a forest with trees that mark space, territory, barlines; or Time like an exit ramp, a cloverleaf highway interchange with its traffic, speed shifts, and the roar of engines… The time it takes a fern to grow, an egg to dry, a bullet to fire, a shoreline to erode …  or a body to touch the ground after a leap; or a composition to get under the fingers and into the brain until all of the parts sing in simultaneity. Dustin Carlson's music bespeaks a fascination with the many varieties of time, its colors, flavors, densities, textures; the motions of time, its extremes of slow growth and quick change. And also with the layering of time, the machinery of orbits, concentric loops, the human body that is a cosmos of looping circulatory systems escaping gravitational force to lumber into movement and execute some flashy moves at a party, at a ceremony, with stars in its veins, a sun in its stomach and arms that span galaxies … this is what only music, when it is truly music, can reveal and teach. Funk is the preacher....

Feinstein's/54 Below threw two Buffy Broadway bashes in November to honor the show's legacy. Buffy's musical episode, 'Once More With Feeling' achieved what no other show had done before - turning an episode of TV into a full-stop hit musical. Many shows have tried to recreate the success of this iconic episode and none have reached the level of stellar storytelling, original music, and a seamless premise that was woven into the episode to make spontaneously bursting into song work for a paranormal drama.

A high flying, high kicking romp of a good time comes full steam ahead back to the Straz Center in Tampa for three days only from May 17-19, 2019. When sales plummet and stock is filtering back in by the truck load it is up to Charlie the heir to the shoe factory to pull the company back on its struggling feet and restore the name of Price &Sons to its glory. Last night's opening of CHURCH GIRLS, the musical, at the Warsaw Federal Incline Theater was a hilarious journey through the crazy and satirical world of religion, politics, and slapstick comedy. CHURCH GIRLS, most definitely, is the funniest show that I have seen in the past five years. Is it silly? Yes. Is it over the top? Yes. Is it worth seeing? Yes. CHURCH GIRLS is the newest and funniest addition to the long line of satirical plays going after those people who use religion for their own means. NUNSENSE may be more refined, but CHURCH GIRLS is funnier.
