Irish Arts Center Announces Spring 2018 Season

Tomorrow, December 7th, Museum of the City of New York will ceremonially unveil their newly restored historic nickel bronze statues of two legendary New Yorkers, Alexander Hamilton and Dewitt Clinton, designed three quarters of a century ago for the Museum by noted sculptor Adolph Alexander Weinman (1870-1952). For the occasion, the Museum will be joined by three stars of the immensely popular Broadway show, Hamilton: Jevon McFerrin, Lexi Lawson, and Anthony Lee Medina.

Yael Stone has withdrawn from Sydney Theatre Company's 2018 production of Saint Joan by George Bernard Shaw following the news that she is expecting her first child. New casting for the iconic role of Joan of Arc will be confirmed in the coming weeks.

Following its hit production of MACHINAL, Greenhouse Theater Center is pleased to continue its 2017-18 season with the return of best-selling author Laurence Leamer's critically acclaimed drama ROSE. After a sold-out run during last season's Solo Celebration! Series, celebrated Chicago actress Linda Reiter reprises her Joseph Jefferson nominated performance as matriarch Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy in this intimate piece directed by Steve Scott. ROSE will play January 12 March 11, 2018 at the Greenhouse Theater Center (Downstairs Main Stage), 2257 N. Lincoln Ave. in Chicago. Single tickets go on sale Monday, November 13, 2017 at greenhousetheater.org, in person at the box office or by calling (773) 404-7336. Season Flex passes are also available. The press opening is Monday, January 15, 2018 at 7:30 pm.

Patchogue Theatre for the Performing Arts (PTPA) is proud to present 'A Charlie Brown Christmas' on Sunday, Nov. 27, adapted for the stage by Eric Schaeffer and based on the Peanuts characters created by Charles M. Schultz.

Steve Martin's and Edie Brickell's Bright Star played Broadway in 2016, garnering a Tony nomination for Carmen Cusack. The show fared somewhat well, but did not seem to be an overall critics' choice. On the minus side, it is an all too familiar story about a backwoods pregnant girl and parental abuse in the 1920s, with far-fetched resolutions and a sweet, but for many, saccharine ending. In spite of this, I was delighted with the bluegrass music by Martin and Brickell, with Walter Bobbie's fluid staging and with the performances. It's most definitely uplifting and an entertaining evening at the Ahmanson through November 19.

With Lauren Gunderson's Silent Sky, the Next Act Theatre invites us, for a couple of hours, to orient ourselves in a place and time before the 1990 Hubble telescope, before the 1969 moon landing, before the first rocket launch in 1926, and before Edwin Hubble proved the vastness of galaxies far beyond our own in 1923. It's here that we meet mathematician and aspiring astronomer Henrietta Leavitt, played by the always-brilliant Deb Staples.

Roundabout Theatre Company presents the new Broadway production of J. B. Priestley's Time and the Conways, directed by Tony winner Rebecca Taichman. Time and the Conways returns to Broadway for the first time since its premiere in 1938.

The Georgetown Palace Theatre has teamed up with The Williamson Museum to mount a production of YOU CAN'T DOTHAT DAN MOODY at the beautiful and historic Williamson County Courthouse. A story of the significant trial and ruling that resulted in the first conviction of KKK members for vigilante 'justice' in the country, this show is not only unfortunately timely but it is also an interesting and well formed evening of theater.

Four distinctively themed programs, each curated by a different member of Momenta Quartet have been announced for Momenta Festival III. 

???????Momenta Festival III premieres begin on opening night (October 1) with the world premiere version for theremin and string quartet of Arnold Schoenberg's Entrückung (“Rapture”) from String Quartet No. 2, Op. 10, arranged by soloist Elizabeth Brown, and the US premiere of English composer Michael Small?'s White Space - Meditation on Saenredam (2015) for solo violin.

American Composers Orchestra (ACO) announces its complete 2017-2018 season, Dreamscapes, under the leadership of Artistic Director Derek Bermel, Music Director George Manahan, and President Edward Yim, featuring ten world, U.S., and New York premieres by a diverse set of composers. ACO continues its concerts at Carnegie Hall's Zankel Hall (December 8, 2017 and April 6, 2018) while expanding its presence in New York to include performances at Jazz at Lincoln Center (November 7, 2017) and as part of the 2018 PROTOTYPE Festival (January 12-14, 2018). ACO continues to take its commitment to fostering new work beyond the stage in its annual Underwood New Music Readings (June 21 and 22, 2018) for emerging composers, now in its 27th year, and through EarShot, the National Orchestra Composition Discovery Network, which brings the Readings experience to orchestras across the country.

Horton Foote's NIGHT SEASONS, directed by Jack Sbarbori at the Quotidian Theatre Company, examines the nature of a life defined by money and greed, and the notion that perhaps living is the greatest punishment of all. Foote, best known for his 1962 screenplay for To Kill a Mockingbird, delivers a quiet critique of capitalist culture and asks us to consider what "home" means. NIGHT SEASONS places us in Harrison Texas, 1963 on Josie Weems' (Jane Squier Bruns) 93rd birthday, though the play deals in flashbacks and the setting easily slips back and forth through 1923-1963 and the years in between. Josie Weems (Jane Squier Bruns) is the manipulative glue that holds the rambling Weems family together by subtly managing finances and allowing and prohibiting marriages at her discretion.

The Minnesota Orchestra announced today that Music Director Osmo Vanska has signed a new three-year contract which will extend his leadership of the Minnesota Orchestra through its 2021-22 season and bring his tenure to 19 years?a length equaled only by founding Music Director Emil Oberhoffer and sixth Music Director Stanislaw Skrowaczewski. 

If you happened to be on the subway this month and smelled something particularly fishy (not the usually kind of subway fishy) you may have been in the same car as a mermaid. Saturday, June 17th, 2017 marked the 35th Annual Mermaid Parade on Coney Island. That's right. One day a year, all the mermaids of Coney Island are magically granted feet and march down Surf Ave and the Boardwalk until they grow their fins back and return to their watery homes… Okay maybe not quite mermaids, but close! Thousands of artists, and mermaid enthusiasts march in the parade every year. Over 3,000 Seashell clad individuals strolled, danced, and rolled down Surf Ave this year. It began pouring rain before the parade and several times during. Luckily, it is the Mermaid Parade, so a little water wasn't a problem for the marchers.

San Francisco Opera today announced its participation as a co-commissioner of The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs—the first full-length opera written by Bay Area composer Mason Bates and set to a libretto by Mark Campbell—joining Santa Fe Opera and Seattle Opera, with support from Cal Performances. The new work is a co-production with Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music and will have its world premiere beginning July 22, 2017 at Santa Fe Opera. San Francisco Opera will present the Bay Area premiere of The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs during the Company's 2019–20 repertory season at the War Memorial Opera House. Bates' electro-acoustic opera is composed in one act and is comprised of a prologue and 19 scenes.
