Copacabana - 1994 - West End Tickets, News, Info & More

Based on the television film

"Her name was Lola. She was a showgirl..." Barry Manilow's Grammy Award-winning song you never forgot is now brought to life onstage!brbrA love letter to the Technicolor musicals of the 1940s, "Barry Manilow's Copacabana" presents the story of Lola as told through the eyes of Stephen, a present day aspiring songwriter whose imagination takes him back to a time when "music and passion were always in fashion." brbrHe dreams up Lola, fresh off the plane from Tulsa, who arrives in New York with show-biz aspirations. Tony (who looks amazingly like Stephen!) is a bartender/composer who falls in love with Lola and helps her become a Copa girl. While performing, Lola attracts the amorous attentions of Rico (who wears a diamond). Rico abducts Lola and takes her to his rival nightclub in Havana. Tony, with the help of his Copacabana friends, must now rescue Lola before...well, even if you know the song, there are still a few surprises!

The word Brazil has its origin in the large quantities of brazilwood trees found in regions of the Brazilian coast. “Brasil” derives from “brasa” (“ember”) because this tree has a red-coloured sap, the colour of ember. For years, these trees were extracted and sold to Europe. We can say that it was one of the products that most often crossed the Atlantic.

Dear Readers, I think it’s time for me to come out to you all. I am here to say that I am an out and proud fan of Barry Manilow. Yes, I’m a Fanilow. From “Mandy” to “American Bandstand” to “I Made it Through the Rain”, I love them all. And, of course, there’s the best, “Copacabana”. Now take that fandom and combine it with my love for Seattle’s Can Can and you’d think their current show would be a sure-fire hit. And you’d be right. “Lola” the latest incarnation from Artistic Director Chris Pink, Choreographer Fae Pink, the delicious folks at the Can Can is not only a hit but one of the best shows I think I’ve ever seen from them (and that’s saying something) and one not to be missed.

“Dinner music” is really too small a term for what Billy Stritch is doing at the West Bank Cafe. That implies something that’s occurring in the background. His smart jazz arrangements of classics from the Great American Songbook are very much front and center.

What do you get when you combine the pianistic finesse of Michael Feinstein, the smooth phrasing of Tony Bennett, and the bawdy wit of Bette Midler? You get Michael McAssey, who for 40 years has reigned as the clown prince of New York cabaret, and has enchanted as one of its most talented troubadours. He calls what he does 'schtick.' But that's undervaluing his unique blend of beautiful ballad singing and standup, or rather 'sit down' comedy.
