Verdi Chorus To Receive Honors At Fall Concert In Santa Monica

The Verdi Chorus 35th anniversary season culminates with its Fall 2018 concert Passione! Opera! for two performances only at the First United Methodist Church in Santa Monica on November 10 and 11 led by Founding Artistic Director Anne Marie Ketchum. As the only choral group in Southern California that focuses primarily on the dramatic and diverse music for opera chorus, this program, which marks the end of a landmark year for the company, will feature selections from three Verdi operas - Aida, Don Carlo, and the famed chorus "Va, pensiero," from Nabucco, as well as operatic sequences from Boito's Mefistofele, Saint-Saens' Samson and Delilah, Catalani's La Wally and Offenbach's The Tales of Hoffmann. Washington National Opera celebrates the centennial of the WWI Armistice with Kevin Puts's and Mark Campbell's Pulitzer Prize-winning opera Silent Night, November 10-25, in the Kennedy Center Eisenhower Theater. Tickets start at $35. Based on the true story of a wartime ceasefire, an event depicted by the 2005 film Joyeux Noel,Silent Night features music by Kevin Puts and libretto by Mark Campbell and stars a cast comprised entirely of WNO family-current members and alumni from the Domingo-Cafritz Young Artist Program and WNO Chorus-with libretto in multiple languages that capture a powerful vision of humanity and hope. With gratitude for their sacrifice and service, Washington National Opera presents Silent Night in honor of all Veterans and members of the U.S. Armed Forces. In addition to hosting a Military Appreciation Day on Sunday, November 25, additional discounts to see the production will be offered for active-duty service members for select performances. It's no secret that Leonard Bernstein has a special place in Pacific Symphony's heart. Music Director Carl St.Clair was mentored by Bernstein and over the years, the orchestra has played numerous concerts featuring this great American master's works. This season's celebration lasts for three nights (Oct. 25-27) starting on Thursday, Oct. 25 and continuing every night through Saturday, Oct. 27, with programming that demonstrates Bernstein's outstanding compositional command of music that often combined the influences of Broadway, jazz, opera, and sacred and secular music. Texas Christian University's (TCU) School of Music at the Bass presents Celebrating Leonard Bernstein - a vibrant, commemorative performance of Bernstein's timeless compositions at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 22 at Bass Performance. The TCU Symphony Orchestra will join the TCU Concert Chorale and distinguished alumni soloists for an evening featuring a celebratory curation of Bernstein's acclaimed works, including the Overture to Candide, Symphonic Dances from West Side Story, Chichester Psalm and more. The tribute performance is part of a worldwide movement, Leonard Bernstein at 100 - a two-year global celebration of the life and career of the 20th century cultural giant, featuring more than 2,500 events on six continents. Juilliard presents An Evening Celebrating 100 Years of the Juilliard Pre-College Division, featuring distinguished conductor Robert Spano, music director of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, leading the Juilliard Pre-College Orchestra in a concert with Juilliard faculty member and Pre-College piano alumnus Emanuel Ax, at 7pm in Alice Tully Hall. The program includes Bernstein's Overture to Candide; Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat Major, Op. 73 ("Emperor"); and Rimsky-Korsakov's Capriccio espagnol, Op. 34, with additional performances by Pre-College students and alumni.
