This cabaret truly takes the audience on a journey through the good, bad, and the unimaginable while always maintaining a sense of beauty. Barbara Bleier and Austin Pendleton are at it again. But to be honest, even during the pandemic they were never gone. They created a show that Pangea streamed for virtual audiences. Tonight that show LIFE, AND LOVE, AND WHO KNOWS WHAT ELSE?  had its debut in front of a live audience in the back room of Pangea. Bleier explained to us that when they were putting the show together two years ago, they intended to write a show with a political theme. But in these extraordinary times, they have discovered that really everything is political. Everything. And that’s the show they have put together: an evening about the politics of patriotism, the politics of career, the politics of aging, the politics of men and women, the politics of marriage, the politics of family, and the politics of falling in love. It is, in fact, a show about everything.

Given all the slapstick in this staging (jousting with pool noodles, silly sound effects, outrageous costumes, sending a coffin to a sea burial down a playground slide, tossing a babe-in-arms around like a fumbled football), the endless choruses of What Shall We Do with the Drunken Sailor in which the audience is encouraged to participate, the deliberately absurd doubling, it might almost seem at times that children are the target demographic here. But grownups will not be bored.

Sally Wilfert returns to Feinstein’s/54 Below with her brand-new show, How Did I End Up Here? She and music director Joseph Thalken take you on a musical journey from innocent Ohio farm girl to acclaimed Broadway songstress.

Sally Wilfert is the kind of singer you just want to listen to all night. She has a crystalline tone that’s clear as a bell. She’s capable of belting without being in your face about it and being soft while still always being present. She’s a great storyteller who takes on characters without losing her own unique personality. She is, in short, a cabaret singer’s cabaret singer. She mixed up standards and show tunes with pop songs and easy listening. It’s not every singer that could get away with using “You Light Up My Life” as an encore, but somehow it just seemed very right.
