Ain't Misbehavin' Revival

To be clear, there is absolutely nothing about this production that is dull, dated, or dusty. The joint is most certainly jumpin’ for an evening full of rowdy, raunchy and humorous songs that capture the love longing and zest for life in the 1920’s/’30s.

Virginia Repertory Theatre has named Desirée Roots as Co-Artistic Director Community. Roots is one of Virginia's best known and most accomplished performing artists. She is the first of three Co-Artistic Directors to be announced in a new leadership model that will steer all artistic aspects of Central Virginia's flagship professional theatre according to Phil Whiteway, Managing Director and co-founder of Virginia Rep. 

The York Theatre Company will honor musical theater legends Richard Maltby, Jr. & David Shire (Baby, Big, Starting Here, Starting Now, Closer Than Ever) with the 2021 Oscar Hammerstein Award for Lifetime Achievement in Musical Theater and Elisa Loti Stein with The York Theatre Company Founders’ Award at the 29th Oscar Hammerstein Award Gala.

The criteria are that these shows have been nominated for Best Musical from the 3rd Tony Awards (the ceremony that started the Best Musical category) in 1949 to the nominations of what will now be the 74th Tony Awards in 2021. I will be determining their signs based upon their Broadway premiere date. With those rules in mind, here we go!

Totem Pole Playhouse, America's beloved summer theatre, located in Caledonia State Park between Gettysburg and Chambersburg, PA, will present the Tony Award-winning musical Ain't Misbehavin' beginning this Sunday, June 17th through July 1st. The show features the music of acclaimed American Jazz pianist, singer, and composer Thomas Wright "Fats" Waller and contains such classic songs as "Honeysuckle Rose," "The Joint is Jumpin'," "Keepin' Out of Mischief Now," "I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter," and "I Can't Give You Anything But Love," plus 25 other toe-tapping songs of the 1920s and 30s. Aint' Misbehavin' won the 1978 Tony Award for Best Musical and the 1988 Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical, as well as a 1982 Emmy Award for Outstanding Musical or Variety Program. This is the first time this award-winning musical has ever been presented at Totem Pole Playhouse. Ain't Misbehavin' features a cast of five vocalists with a live jazz band on stage throughout the two-hour show.

The 72nd Annual Tony Awards are this Sunday June 10th at 8/9c hosted by Josh Groban and Sara Bareilles. It's the biggest award show of the Broadway season and it closes out a long awards season for Broadway and Off-Broadway musicals and plays.
