BWW Review: BRAN NUE DAE at The Regal Theatre
by Cicely Binford - Feb 13, 2020

It's been 30 years since Bran Nue Dae was first brought to the stage at UWA's Octagon Theatre for the 1990 Festival of Perth. Its full-circle return to Perth brings the groundbreaking musical to The Regal Theatre in Subiaco, as an Opera Conference Production in association with Perth Festival. For those of us who weren't around in Perth in '90, and who have only come to know the musical through the film version made in 2009, this revival is timely and sorely needed.

Listen to Kaskade and BROHUG's New Single '1990'
by Sarah Jae Leiber - Jan 29, 2020

Kaskade joins forces with the Swedish trio BROHUG (composed of John Dahlbäck, and Chris and Niklas Lunde) for perhaps the most prolific throwback single in electronic music to date, a tribute to one of the most significant years in music - 1990. The namesake-titled track is a play on SNAP!'s iconic 'The Power,' reworked with snippets of the original vocals set to Kaskade and BROHUG's ingenious production. Opening with a groovy melody as the backdrop to nostalgia-ridden lyrical riffs, '1990' progressively builds the tension to almost unbearable levels. We all know the moments just before a track of this magnitude drops, and the pressure is real right before the bouncy and driving crescendo, on which every old school fan's favorite line, 'I've Got the Power!' rides perfectly. '1990' is out on Kaskade's Arkade imprint.

BWW Review: CYRANO DE BERGERAC, Playhouse Theatre
by Aliya Al-Hassan - Dec 8, 2019

When you enter a theatre to a soundtrack of Stormzy and open the programme to see a Beatboxer listed on the credits, you know that this is probably not a traditional staging of a nineteenth century play. Much anticipation has been building for Martin Crimp's new adaptation of Cyrano de Bergerac. Directed by Jamie Lloyd and starring James McAvoy, this magnificent show has stardust sprinkled all over it.

BWW Review: THE OUTSIDERS at West Fargo Sheyenne
by Brian Michaels - Nov 22, 2019

Based on the classic novel by S.E. Hinton which she started writing at the age of 15 in 1965 and published in 1967, The Outsiders is a coming of age novel about the conflict between two rival gangs: The Greasers and The Socs (Short for Socials). The book is written in the first person as told by Ponyboy Curtis. The play does try to stick to that also by having Ponyboy narrate numerous parts. The Play was first published in 1990 and I hear there is a musical adaptation in the works.

Will Downing Releases the First of Two EP Tributes
by Sarah Jae Leiber - Oct 22, 2019

The tribute album is certainly not a new concept, as artists have raised their voices in celebration of iconic musicians and songwriters in all sorts of creative ways over the years. So conventional wisdom would suggest, there's no new way to approach this concept? Well what if you celebrated a 'sound” – more specifically, you celebrated the personal influence and impact of a 'vocal range' in a particular genre? If you contemplate the creation of a modern day tribute to the impact of 'deep male voices' of the past in 'romantic ballad' settings, one name should instantly stand out from the all the rest – The Prince of Sophisticated Soul himself, Will Downing.

BWW Review: 3-D Theatricals' Revisit with SHREK Offers Colorful Cheeky Fun
by Michael Quintos - Aug 16, 2019

As the final show of its 10th Anniversary Season, 3-D Theatricals is revisiting the hilarious SHREK - THE MUSICAL, the stage musical adaptation of the hit 2001 Dreamworks animated film, itself an adaptation of William Steig's 1990 novel. Witty, silly, and, at times, surprisingly full of heart, SHREK is a fun, madcap distraction we all need these days. The impressive, high-quality production continues at the gorgeous, state-of-the-art Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts through August 25, 2019.
