THE DEVIL IS STILL IN THE DETAILS... OPENING APRIL 5, 2019
THE MASTER & MARGARITA premieres new shape at Theater off Jackson APRIL 2019.
"... pure theatrical poetry - and poetry in the theatre is as startlingly unexpected as spiritual honesty in everyday life." The Georgia Straight

Not published until the 60s, but written in Moscow between 1932-1940, the novel is arranged like a series of nesting dolls. For example The outside shape is 1932: The Devil and Entourage come to Moscow to see if Stalin's politics have actually changed human nature. Inside of that framework is the love story of a writer and his muse. The Master, a novelist, has been humiliated in the papers for writing an alternate gospel of Jesus and Pontius Pilate in a country where religion is outlawed. And while he hides, Margarita searches for him and finds The Devil and his entourage. Inside of THAT is the story of the Master's novel - this fateful meeting in Jerusalem. Except not the way you've heard it before.

"theater simple balances the grotesque with the sublimely elegant, juxtaposes absurdity with profundity and makes light of darkness. Superb. ~ The Adelaide Advertiser.
WINNER BEST PLAY, Adelaide Fringe
This adaptation uses the magic of theater and the elastic superpower of the audience's imagination to conjure these worlds and realities with 5 actors, 3 screens a trunk and a stage light. Hella fun. Originally created 25 years ago, this adaptation toured for nearly 4 years across Canada, the US, and Australia, winning all sorts of awards and accolades. Taking Seattle by storm, M&M was named one of the Best shows of the Year by every paper in the city.
