Review: Forgiveness & Family Dynamics: INCIDENT AT OUR LADY OF PERPETUAL HOPE
by Carla Maria Verdino-Süllwold on Jan 29, 2024

Katie Forgette’s bittersweet memory play about a Catholic childhood in the 1970s takes the stage at the Public Theatre in Lewiston in a gently funny and touching production directed by Janet Mitchko.  INCIDENT AT OUR LADY OF PERPETUAL HELP focuses on the O’Shea family, a prototypical middle class Irish-American Catholic family, who grapple with the daily struggles of making ends meet, raising two daughters, and caring for each other within the context and constraints of their Catholic upbringing and community. The universality of the characters, and their quest for compassion and forgiveness gives the work its heart.

Review: THE VICTORIAN LADIES DETECTIVE COLLECTIVE Confronts Convention, Gender Bias - and a Serial Killer
by Carla Maria Verdino-Süllwold on Nov 7, 2022

The Public Theatre’s production of Patricia Milton’s THE VICTORIAN LADIES DETECTIVE COLLECTIVE is a witty, sophisticated, clever examination of late Victorian mores, skillfully embedded with subtle feminist rhetoric, and all encased in the classic mystery thriller format. Add to this recipe a handful of zany, colorful characters and some facile repartee, and the end result is a delightfully period piece with a compelling contemporary twist.

BWW Review: Public Theatre's DANCING LESSONS Is a Poignant Pas de Deux
by Carla Maria Verdino-Süllwold on Mar 22, 2022

The Public Theatre’s latest offering is a poignant, quirky romantic comedy that becomes a heartwarming pas de deux between its injured dancer heroine and a geoscientist with Asperger’s Syndrome, who enlists her help not only in learning to dance, but also in exploring, what for him, is the uncharted territory of human friendship and intimacy. Mark St. Germain’s 2014 two-character, seventy-five minute play dances with an ironic humor, fast repartee, unexpected revelations that evolve from the relationship of this mismatched pair, and an ending that is hopeful in its transformative inner reality.
