Albatross, written by George Devine and Bruntwood Prize winner Martha Loader and directed by Patrick Morris, is a new play commissioned by Menagerie Theatre, rooted in two years of research and interviews with Antarctic researchers. The play follows glaciologist Alice, played by Caroline Rippin, and her mother Eve, played by Agnes Lillis, as they navigate unspoken secrets and unasked favours against the backdrop of the climate emergency. When Alice returns in the middle of the night from her latest stint in Antarctica, she is met with catastrophic floods and unexpected changes at home, while her daughter Alba sleeps unaware of her return. The play explores intergenerational responsibility and the cost of good intentions, asking what one generation truly owes the next.
