Review: LEAVING ON A JET PLANE at Florida Studio Theatre

Aaron Gandy, the mastermind behind the beloved "Band Called Honalee" from last summer’s cabaret, has unveiled the latest gem in FST's summer cabaret lineup - behold, "LEAVING ON A JET PLANE"! This delightful cabaret is a musical time machine, whisking audiences away to the golden era of the 1960s with its favorite tunes that evoke a sense of innocent nostalgia. It's a surefire hit that is guaranteed to bring smiles to faces and melodies to hearts. Immerse yourself in the folk songs of yesteryears and experience firsthand why this period is often hailed as one of the pinnacle moments in music history.

Katie Blackwell shines as the powerful female vocalist, complemented by the dynamic guitar duo of Brian Ott and Collin Purcell. Each musician brims with individual talent, boasting captivating voices, infectious positivity, and beaming smiles. However, it is when their musical talents intertwine that a profound energy and richness captivate the audience.
The essence of these performances lies in the compelling narratives woven around beloved songs. Whether revealing the origins of a composition, sharing anecdotes about its creators and performers, or unveiling intriguing trivia, Blackwell, Ott, and Purcell infuse each melody with personal connections and heartfelt stories. It becomes evident that these artists share a profound bond with the music they bring to life, each offering a unique journey of exploration and discovery within these cherished tunes.
One of the most enchanting moments of the show occurs through their medleys. Seamlessly merging four or five distinct songs, the trio crafts a musical tapestry that, despite each tune's differences, resonates with a cohesive narrative arc. This innovative approach elevates the experience and underscores the artistry and creativity at play.

The folk music from the 60’s holds a special place in many hearts, as it captures the essence of human struggles - be it love, loss, or the quest for understanding our shared humanity. Listening to these songs can often transport us back to a bygone era, evoking fond memories of a time when the music was not just a sound, but a messenger of emotions and experiences. It's no wonder that these tunes continue to resonate with people across generations, reminding us that the power of music knows no bounds!
