Athol Fugard’s incandescent and thought-provoking "The Road to Mecca" comes to San Francisco’s Z Below. Obie Award winner Timothy Near and the team behind the stunning sold-out run of Fugard’s "A Lesson from Aloes" at Z Below, which won a San Francisco Bay Area Critics Award for Best Entire Production and received the San Francisco Chronicle’s highest rating, reunite for this luminous new production. In "The Road to Mecca," an artist fills her garden with fantastical life-sized sculptures representing an imaginary Mecca. Inspired by South Africa’s Helen Martins, whose home “The Owl House” is now a cultural site, this personal and thought-provoking play examines the fight to create art in the face of oppression.

What did our critic think of THE ROAD TO MECCA at Z Below? They say there’s a thin line between madness and genius. Aging widow Helen finds herself caught in a battle between her artistic freedom and conservative moralism. The battle plays out in an attempt to move her from her eccentric, fantasy-filled home to an old-age home supposedly for her safety. Athol Fugard’s award-winning play comes to life with three of the finest acting performances in recent memory.
BroadwayWorld talks to director Timothy Near about her new production of Athol Fugard's incandescent 'The Road to Mecca' playing at Z Below in San Francisco June 4 to 30.
