San Francisco International Arts Festival Announced 2018 Detailed Schedule

The San Francisco International Arts Festival (SFIAF) released the detailed performance schedule for the 2018 Program today. Forty different artist ensembles and companies will present their work exclusively at the Fort Mason Center for Arts & Culture (FMCAC) from May 24 - June 3. Early Bird Tickets will go on sale for $15 on Thursday March 1.

Three-Day Performance Competition MARSH MADNESS Announced at The Marsh

While college basketball teams are competing to see who is the best team in the nation during March Madness, local performers will play for glory in The Marsh's Marsh Madness. This three-day festival brings a wide variety of performers center stage, including storytellers, improv groups, comedians, actors, musicians, dancers, mimes, and monologists, allowing audiences to get a glimpse of new and developing works from the Bay Area's vast talent pool. Audiences of Marsh Madness also have the chance to help select future stars, as the team that wins first prize will receive $1,000 and the opportunity to perform a main stage run at The Marsh, one of the nation's leading performance houses for solo and new performances. Up to 32 teams will perform in Marsh Madness March 9 - March 11, 2018 at The Marsh San Francisco, 1062 Valencia St., San Francisco.

African-American Shakespeare Company Tackles An American Classic With A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE

For the first time in its 23-year history, the African-American Shakespeare Company will present A Streetcar Named Desire. As is the company's custom, each season they choose one non-Shakespeare play from the canon of American classics. Tennessee Williams' Streetcar follows in the footsteps of the company's well-received 2017 production of August Wilson's Jitney, also staged at Marines Memorial.

San Francisco Opera presents Richard Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen (The Ring of the Nibelung) in three complete cycles, each presented over the course of one week as the composer originally intended, from June 12 through July 1 at the War Memorial Opera House. Encompassing four operas-Das Rheingold, Die Walkure, Siegfried and Gotterdammerung-and more than 17 hours, the story and music of Wagner's Ring are the acme of the operatic artform and one of the most ambitious works of music, theater and stagecraft ever created. In anticipation of the performances, San Francisco Opera today announced a schedule for its Ring Festival events designed to provide the public, from first-timers to experienced Ring-goers, with enriching activities including lectures, symposia, film screenings, musical programs, public discussions and a Ring Community Day for families.

Ka·nei·see | collective, a contemporary dance company under the direction of Tanya Chianese, is pleased to announce the world premiere of NEVERTHELESS, a collaboration with the Bay Area's all-women Cat Call Choir. Drawing inspiration from the feminist battle cry, "Nevertheless, she persisted," Nevertheless surveys the field of gender-based harassment from the subtle to the violent, in a marriage of song and dance, comedy and horror. Nevertheless runs April 19 - 22 at CounterPulse, with shows at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, and at 5 p.m. on Sunday. On Thursday February 8, 2018 from 5:30-8pm, Collect For Change, AKArt, and state will co-present a conversation with artists Angela Hennessy, Michele Pred, and Piyali Banerjie on the role of the arts in activism. In conjunction with our current exhibition, Object Action: The 'F' Word in a Post-Truth Era, the artists will speak about their own work, both in and out of the social practice realm, and their featured pieces in the group show. Concluding the discussion, Angela Hennessy will perform a reading of her The School of the Dead manifesto, after which a reception will follow. Berkeley Repertory Theatre announced that due to scheduling conflicts, Nilaja Sun's Pike St. will be replaced by What the Constitution Means to Me as the final production in its 2017-18 season. Written by and starring award-winning playwright and actress Heidi Schreck and directed by Oliver Butler, What the Constitution Means to Me will have its world premiere in the Peet's Theatre.
Golden Thread Productions Launches Season with OH MY SWEET LAND

Golden Thread Productions, the first American theatre company devoted to the Middle East, launches its 2018 season with the return of Amir Nizar Zuabi's Oh My Sweet Land, a tour-de-force solo show based on interviews with Syrian refugees in Jordan, for an extended run. Instead of staging the play in a theater, Golden Thread presents the show in home and community kitchens around the Bay Area with performances followed by food-sharing and community conversations.

The San Francisco-based, Grammy-winning Kronos Quartet / Kronos Performing Arts Association (KPAA) presents its fourth annual hometown music festival Kronos Festival 2018. With six concerts over three days, Kronos Festival 2018 illustrates one of the group's central artistic tenets: collaboration. After Kronos performed at NPR Music's 10th anniversary concert last month, NPR Music's Tom Huizenga wrote, 'Collaboration. It's in the DNA of the intrepid Kronos Quartet, which some 40 years ago began working with composers around the globe to spotlight new music.'
TheatreWorks Brings OSKAR To Bay Area Students This February

In an effort to help today's K-5 students develop the resiliency and coping strategies needed to deal with bullying at school and avoid bullying others, and to learn how to manage when stress and pressure become overwhelming, TheatreWorks Silicon Valley's Education program will be touring Bay Area schools with its award-winning shows Oskar and the Big Bully Battle, and Oskar and the Last Straw. The Oskar tour runs February 26 to April 13, 2018 with performances scheduled in the South Bay, Peninsula, East Bay, and San Francisco (see tour location list below for specific schools). THE BOOK OF MORMON, winner of nine Tony Awards including Best Musical, is pleased to announce a lottery ticket policy for the National Tour, which begins February 6 at the SHN Orpheum Theatre in San Francisco and plays a limited four-week engagement through March 4. In San Francisco, the production will conduct a pre-show lottery at the box office, making a limited number of tickets available at $25 apiece.

The African & African American Performing Arts Coalition and K*Star*Productions are pleased to announce the program for the Black Choreographers Festival: Here and Now 2018 (BCF), which takes place over three consecutive weekends, February 17 - March 4, in San Francisco and Oakland. Following the opening weekend at Dance Mission Theater in San Francisco, the festival moves to SAFEhouse Arts at 145 Eddy Street for weekend two, with a final program at Laney College Theater in Oakland, March 3 - 4. Word for Word's first production of their 25th Anniversary Season is Lucia Berlin:Stories running February 14-March 11, in the Z Below Theater in San Francisco. Lucia Berlin:Stories opens with press performances February 17 & 18, Saturday 8 PM and Sunday 3 PM  (previews Feb. 14 - 16). The stories are from Lucia Berlin's posthumously published, critically acclaimed, A Manual for Cleaning Women featuring the stories 'Her First Detox', 'Emergency Room Notebook 1977', 'Unmanageable', '502' and 'Here It Is Saturday'. Directed by Nancy Shelby and JoAnne Winter, Lucia Berlin:Stories is set to an evocative jazz score by Marcus Shelby, and illuminated with vibrant projections by Naomie Kremer. Author Lydia Davis in The New Yorker described Berlin's work: 'Lucia Berlin's stories are electric, they buzz and crackle as the live wires touch....This is exhilarating writing' On Sunday, February 25,following the 3PM performance: Lucia's Sons, a post-show talk with Jeff Berlin and David Berlin in conversation with the audience and remarking about the performances, stories, and their life with their mother Lucia Berlin. 
Palo Alto Players Announces 2018-19 Season

Palo Alto Players, the Peninsula's first theatre company, announces its 88th season - featuring four Peninsula premieres and a re-imagined classic. Theatre Bay Area is pleased to announce playwright Ofra Daniel and the Jewish Circle Theatre have been selected as the recipients of this year's prestigious Will Glickman Award for Love Sick. The play's world premiere, produced by Jewish Circle Theatre in association with John Gertz Productions, ran at the Osher Studio in Berkeley from January 12 through February 12, 2017, and then at Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts February 23 to March 19, 2017. This is the first Will Glickman Award for both Ofra Daniel and Jewish Circle Theatre.
