by E.H. Reiter - February 22, 2018

UCI Drama Looks at Immigration and Gender Equality in PLUMAS NEGRAS
by BWW News Desk - February 20, 2018
UC Irvine's Claire Trevor School of the Arts Department of Drama continues its 2017 - 18 season "The Business of Politics/The Politics of Business" with Professor Juliette Carrillo's original work Plumas Negras. Carrillo began this project while working with Cornerstone Theater Company in the East Salinas community back in 2013; she interviewed countless farmworkers, and as she heard story after compelling story, a narrative began to emerge. The play's narrative follows the lives of three generations of female workers, the struggles that tear their families apart, and the love that binds them together. Also partially narrating the action are two wise crows, as magical realism weaves throughout a script that is rich with serious explorations of workers' rights, gender inequity, and the perceptions and treatment of the immigrant population.

BWW Review: THE SAN DIEGO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA at The Jacobs Music Center
by Ron Bierman - February 15, 2018
Sameer Patel, Associate Conductor of the San Diego Symphony Orchestra, made his subscription series debut with Liszt's Les Preludes, the fifth symphony of Sibelius, and the world premiere of Adam Schoenberg's violin concerto Orchard in Fog. Les Preludes is one of 13 tone poems written by Liszt. He invented the single-movement form as a way to evoke specific scenes or moods. Liszt sites a poem by Alphonse de Lamartine in the score, but it appears it wasn't his original inspiration since Les Preludes is an adaptation of an overture written for an abandoned larger work based on a different text.

Neil Simon's I OUGHT TO BE IN PICTURES Hits Patio Playhouse This Friday, 2/16
by BWW News Desk - February 14, 2018
Patio Playhouse Community Theater is proud to present I Ought to Be in Pictures by Neil Simon. In this charming comedy, Herb, a Hollywood scriptwriter currently 'at liberty,' is surprised when his forgotten past reappears in the form of Libby, a teenage daughter who has trekked from Brooklyn with dreams of movie stardom. With Steffy (his sometime paramour) at his side, Herb decides to take another stab at fatherhood and -- hopefully -- this time, get it right. This hilarious piece by Neil Simon has all of the humor you'd expect when dropping a long-lost and nearly-grown daughter into her father's Hollywood home, but also addresses family dynamics head on, and touches on how, in finding where you come from, you just might find who you are meant to be.
