Review: MENSA at OnStage Playhouse

Review: MENSA at OnStage Playhouse

San Diego: ErinMarie Reiter • September 10, 2026

There is no magic equation for solving political division, or for fixing a culture that increasingly seems to prefer arguing at one another rather than actually talking. Mensa doesn’t pretend to have that answer, but it does offer a nice opening to start the conversation.

Review: RENT at Bucks County Playhouse

Review: RENT at Bucks County Playhouse

Philadelphia: Marakay Rogers • September 10, 2026

As the group Straight No Chaser sings, 'Five hundred twenty five thousand choirs have sung this... thanks to the writer, we all leave sad.'  Without detail - yes, true. Jonathan Larson died before opening night of his own show about death and dying and drugs and rent strikes, leaving a show that feels unfinished and indeed sad. His death is part of the mystique of the show, but it's also the problem - what might another month of retooling have brought about?

Review: THE YELLOW WALLPAPER at The Archive Theater

Review: THE YELLOW WALLPAPER at The Archive Theater

Austin: Joni Lorraine • September 10, 2026

Just want to say, right away, I’m absolutely recommending THE YELLOW WALLPAPER. It seems in times like these that many of us would seek a more uplifting way to spend two hours, but stick with me. This one is relevant, important, and just about perfectly executed.

Review: HOW I LEARNED WHAT I LEARNED at RESIDENT ENSEMBLE PLAYERS

Review: HOW I LEARNED WHAT I LEARNED at RESIDENT ENSEMBLE PLAYERS

Delaware: Greer Firestone • September 10, 2026

A one-man show is a monumental undertaking—and a monumental responsibility. For veteran REP actor Hassan El-Amin – who is Black -there is further gravitas in giving voice to August Wilson’s HOW I LEARNED WHAT I LEARNED, a 90-minute, no-intermission journey through the experiences that forged one of America’s greatest playwrights. Wilson created the remarkable American Century Cycle, ten plays chronicling the African American experience across ten decades of the 20th century. They include Joe Turner’s Come and Gone, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Fences and The Piano Lesson, the latter two earning Pulitzer Prizes. His works have been produced on Broadway and around the world. Denzel has made them part of his life’s work.

Review: THE COOK at Berkeley Rep

Review: THE COOK at Berkeley Rep

San Francisco / Bay Area: Steve Murray • September 10, 2026

A love of food sustains houseworker Gladys over a forty-year arc that coincides with the social, economic and political changes wrought by the Cuban revolution of 1959 in Eduardo Machado’s The Cook, opening Berkeley Rep’s 59th season.  In Tanya Orellana’s superbly appointed and functional kitchen set, Yesenia Iglesias in the titular role will make a vow of loyalty that will split her family apart.

Review: HEIST at Constellation Stage & Screen

Review: HEIST at Constellation Stage & Screen

Indianapolis: Lawana Penrod • September 9, 2026

Heist has a very cinematic feel to it throughout the show with its creative use of digital media. Clever interactive pieces in the lobby draws the audience into the story from the moment they arrive.

Review: DISNEY'S NEWSIES at Starlight Theater

Review: DISNEY'S NEWSIES at Starlight Theater

Kansas City: Alan Portner • September 9, 2026

Disney’s Newsies does not merely seize the day. It dances on it, vaults over it and occasionally executes a backflip before the day knows what struck it. It takes an 1899 historical event as a jumping off place and imagines the history as it might have been retold in a 1930’s Busby Berkeley movie substituting teenage newsboys for the 1930s dancing girls.  The show gets high marks for entertainment.

Review: BURLESQUE, King's Theatre

Review: BURLESQUE, King's Theatre

Scotland: Natalie O'Donoghue • September 9, 2026

From executive producer Christina Aguilera and written by Steven Antin, based on the hit movie, Burlesque invites you to a club like no other: a hidden world beneath the city lights where sequins sparkle, seduction shimmers and lives can change in the flick of a feather boa.

Review: THE NORWEGIANS at Shakespeare & Company

Review: THE NORWEGIANS at Shakespeare & Company

Boston: Marc Savitt • September 8, 2026

Murder-for-hire seems dark, and yes, some of the language can be a bit colorful (a few F-bombs are dropped), but really, this is a delightful little production with the emphasis on comedy that one might almost label as cute, possibly endearing.
