Rise and shine, BroadwayWorld! It is September 9, 2024 and it's time to catch up on all of the theatrical happenings you may have missed over the weekend. 

Kenny Ortega, known for his work as a director and choreographer with High School Musical and the Descendants franchises, is taking on an iconic theatre figure: the Phantom of the Opera.

THE APPLE BOYS, a new fast-paced musical comedy set in Gilded Age Coney Island, with book by Jono Lyons and music and lyrics by 2017 Jonathan Larson Grant recipient Ben Bonnema, will have industry presentations on Monday, September 23 and Tuesday, September 24 in Manhattan at Ripley Grier 38th St. Studios.

Applications for the 2025 Illinois High School Musical Theatre Awards open on September 4. Schools across Illinois are invited to participate in this prestigious event celebrating high school musical theatre talent.

In 2024, Abraham will premiere two evening-length works, Cassette Vol. 1 in Hamburg, German in August, and in December ‘Dear Lord, Make Me Beautiful’ at the Park Avenue Armory in New York City.

Casting has been announced for the fourth and final week of The Blank Theatre's 32nd Annual Young Playwrights Festival. The last three of 12 winning plays by young playwrights aged 15–19 will be presented live onstage August 1–4.

This Saturday, Broadway Babysitters, an arts-focused childcare company led by an ensemble of expert childcare professionals, will show off their talents. You may have seen them at the playground or even in your own living room, but never quite like this! The show features songs from The Sound of Music, Sweeney Todd, High School Musical, and more.

Rob Minkoff, director of 1994's The Lion King, will be bringing James Chiao's musical Tenor by Night to the screen. The adaptation is penned by Peter Barsocchini, who wrote the screenplay for all three High School Musical movies. Arthur Sarkissian and Julia Jay Pierrepont III serve as producers, with Chiao as executive producer.
