Dagmar Šimková spent fifteen years in a communist prison. She described her experience in a very strong and beautiful way in her book called We Were Also There.
Her extremely powerful description of the nastiest face of the communism inspired Karel Steigerwald for his drama My Distant Homeland.
Theme of this play is not the cruelty of the regime of that time but our – contemporary – inability to cope with this past. The play reflects all this with a grotesque approach. It depictures the vanity of Czech account to draw a thick line under the Czech past, and the misery of the Czech farewell with communist era.
