Ashland New Plays Festival Announces Fall Festival Schedule

Ashland New Plays Festival today announced the schedule for its 27th annual Fall Festival, which takes place October 17-21, 2018, at the Unitarian Center, 87 4th Street in Ashland.

RENEE'S QUEER CABARET, a "resistance variety show" hosted by local singer-songwriter Renee Muzquiz made its debut last week at Artists Rep as part of the Risk/Reward Festival. Submissions are now being accepted for the next installment of the new monthly series, which takes place on October 20.

Portland Center Stage at The Armory's 2018-2019 season launches with the Tony Award-winning musical The Color Purple, adapted from Alice Walker's classic novel about the sisterhood, resilience and self-empowerment found in a community of black women living in rural Georgia in the early 20th century. The Color Purple begins preview performances on September 15, opens on September 21, and runs through October 28 on the U.S. Bank Main Stage. Timothy Douglas directs the production, joined by music director Darius Smith, who will bring the Grammy Award-winning score to life.

Adam Bock's A Life, commissioned by Portland Center Stage at The Armory, will receive its West Coast debut at The Armory following the success of the play's world premiere in New York. A Life begins preview performances on September 29, opens on October 5, and runs through November 11 in the Ellyn Bye Studio. Associate Artistic Director Rose Riordan, who has frequently partnered with Bock, will direct. Nat DeWolf (Broadway: Take Me Out) will make his company debut as the astrology-loving and hopelessly single Nate Martin. DeWolf is joined by Cycerli Ash, also making her debut at The Armory, as well as returning artists Dana Green (Major Barbara and many others) and Gary Norman (Our Town).

OSF Cancels Green Show For Remainder Of 2018

The Oregon Shakespeare Festival will end its Green Show season early due the ongoing impacts of wildfire smoke. The Green Show, a series of free performances typically offered on OSF's Courtyard Stage six nights a week throughout the summer and into mid-October, will end on Sunday, Aug. 26, 2018. The Festival remains open and its 10 mainstage plays will continue into October.

Portland Center Stage At The Armory Welcomes Artistic Director Marissa Wolf

Ted Austin, Chair of the Board of Directors at Portland Center Stage at The Armory, announced today that Marissa Wolf has been selected as the next Artistic Director at Portland Center Stage at The Armory, after an eight-month, nationwide search. Wolf, most recently the Associate Artistic Director at Kansas City Repertory Theatre, previously served as the Artistic Director at San Francisco's innovative Crowded Fire Theater. Wolf joins Managing Director Cynthia Fuhrman as co-leader of the city's leading professional theater and begins her role full-time on September 15, 2018.

The Oregon Shakespeare Festival opened Rodgers and Hammerstein's Oklahoma!, directed by OSF Artistic Director Bill Rauch, on April 22 in the Angus Bowmer Theatre. Preview performances were April 18, 20 and 21, and the musical runs through Oct. 27.
PIPPIN Comes to Lakewood Theatre Company

Lakewood Theatre Company continues its 66th season with the extraordinarily timeless tale of Pippin from composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Godspell). Directed by Paul Angelo with musical direction by Valery Saul and choreography by Erin Shannon, this musical questions the choices we make in life that lead us to happiness. Pippin first premiered on Broadway in 1972, with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and book by Roger O. Hirson. The original production featured choreography and direction by Bob Fosse, who won Tony awards for both categories in 1973. Lakewood Theatre Company's production opens September 7 and runs through October 14, 2018 on the Headlee Mainstage at Lakewood Center for the Arts, 368 S. State Street in Lake Oswego.

Artists Repertory Theatre kicks off its 2018/19 season with Skeleton Crew by Dominique Morisseau, directed by William (Bill) Earl Ray. Skeleton Crew is the third play in Morisseau's The Detroit Project (A 3-Play Cycle) following Detroit '67 and Paradise Blue. For Skeleton Crew, Morisseau received a 2016 Obie Award and the play was selected for the 2014 Kilroy List. Skeleton Crew runs from September 2 through September 30 on the Morrison Stage.

When Ren (Noah Miller) and his mother (Sarah Rose-Fish) move from Chicago to a rural town, Ren is prepared for the inevitable adjustment period at his new high school. What he isn't prepared for are rigorous local edicts, including a ban on dancing instituted by the local preacher (Richard Pratt). When the reverend's rebellious daughter, Ariel (Stephanie Koffroth), sets her sights on Ren, he finds himself at odds with most of the town, including the Reverend Moore. With help from Ariel and his new best friend, Willard (Ethan Keleher), Ren challenges the law and helps heal a hurting community. Footloose celebrates the wisdom of listening to young people, guiding them with a warm heart and an open mind.
