It is usually recited at christenings and funerals alike. J.S. Bach's magnificent Cantata based on Psalm 23, uses of horns, signaling the pastoral nature of the text. Herbert Howells' "Requiem" is a departure from the traditional Latin Requiem and sets several texts from the English Burial service, including the 23rd Psalm. This a cappella choral work was published posthumously and was originally a study for his larger choral work "Hymnus Paradisi" which was a memorial to the composer's son who died suddenly at the age of 11.
