Broadway Rewind: WEST SIDE STORY Rumbles Back to Broadway in 2009!

Just last month, Broadway celebrated the return of West Side Story- a daring new interpretation from director Ivo van Hove. In 2009, Broadway was celebrating the opening of a different West Side Story. This version, which opened March 19 at the Palace Theatre, starred Matt Cavenaugh, Josefina Scaglione, and Tony winner Karen Olivo, and new Spanish lyrics from Lin-Manuel Miranda. The revival would go on to play 748 performances, running just under two years.

The six member cast starred musical theatre stars Julie Garnye and Juliana Hansen, Broadway's Melody Hollis and Kristofer McNeely, and musical theatre star Jeffrey Christopher Todd, with Special Guest... Broadway, film, TV, concert and recording star Lainie Kazan. Christy Crowel served as the evening's Musical Director, with Shelly Markham serving as Musical Director for Lainie Kazan. Bruce Kimmel conceived, produced and directed Take Me Along, with Adryan Russ on board as Associate Producer.

Runners up included San Francisco's Michael David (2nd place); Matthew McFarland (3rd place); Emily Goglia (4th place); and Reba Buhr (5th place). There's a nice 'buzz' generating from a small production of 'I DO! I DO!' in San Diego's Old Globe Theatre, taking place in the new Sheryl and Harvey White Theatre venue. The production happened through an alchemy of perfect timing and availability for everyone involved as Lost in Yonkers, directed by Scott Schwartz was originally scheduled to be the first show in the space. The Old Globe's Louis G. Spisto brought the renovation in on time and in-budget with time to spare and had been talking for some time to both stars, who had expressed interest in the piece, which rarely gets high-profile productions.
