The birth of western civilization and democracy takes form in the Greek epic Hellas, told in verse, mask, rhythm, dance, and stage combat. I decided to speak with writer/director Christopher William Johnson about his epic creation process and challenges of presenting the complete saga at the Broadwater Main Stage theater through May 11.

What did our critic think of SCHOOL OF NIGHT'S HELLAS IN A TRIUMPH OF STYLIZED STORYTELLING at The Broadwater MainStage?

Teaming up again with producer Drew Vandenberg (Faye Webster, of Montreal, Kishi Bashi), the group delves into the early days of marriage and newfound motherhood while reflecting on the relationships that have made them who they are now. The album masterfully melds influences ranging from infectious synth-pop.

That laughter you hear coming from within the Troutt Theatre on the Belmont University campus this weekend and next should probably come with a trigger warning. For no matter how rollicking, rambunctious and uproarious it truly is, it should be pointed out that what is transpiring on that stage over two weekends is, indeed, the stuff of post-traumatic stress – or, not to put too fine a point on it, it would be if the shenanigans weren’t brilliantly scripted, infinitely well-rehearsed and just the way it should be.

Originally premiering at last year’s Hollywood Fringe, The School of Night reprises their award-winning production of Battlesong of Boudica April 9, 2023 at The Hudson Backstage. Co-founder and writer Christopher William Johnson directs the cast of Jen Albert, Daniel Adomian, Tom Block, Colin A Borden, Payton Cella, Sara Gorsky, Brad C. Light, Chloe Madriaga, Christopher Neiman, Tristan Rewald, Lacey  Rosewall, Lucy  Schmidt, Allegra  Rodriguez Shivers, Jack TenBarge, Jesse James Thomas, Frank Tirimacco and Dan Wingard. I got to throw out some questions to Jen, who’s playing the titular role of Boudica. And she punched back her answers directly on target.

The School of Night (Punch and Judy, Klingon Tamburlaine, Hercules Insane, The Final Girl, The Troublesome Reign, Lamentable Death of Edward II) presents Battlesong of Boudica, returning after its award-winning 2022 Hollywood Fringe premiere.
