Celebrities Record 'Christmas Magic' Benefiting COMEDY GIVES BACK

“Let's join hands and stand in a circle” isn't just the chorus of this year's holiday song from writers Avery Pearson & Jordan Baum, benefittng the non-profit Comedy Gives Back, but the foundation for a new initiative being activated by the organization. Comedy Gives Back: Taking Care of Our Own benefits stand-up comedians in times of need, whether it's emergency financial relief grants, access to mental health services or substance abuse treatment. Being on-stage alone is the job. Feeling alone offstage is unacceptable, and Comedy Gives Back is changing that.

BWW Review: New Rep's OLIVER!: Singing and Dancing Orphans, But No Dog

New Repertory Theatre dusts off an old chestnut for a family-friendly, non-holiday, crowd-pleasing offering as their gift for the season. Lionel Bart's OLIVER!, based on Charles Dickens' novel OLIVER TWIST, is known to be a little dark, with its themes of orphans, child exploitation, and vast income inequality (sound familiar?), but in the hands of New Rep's new Artistic Director, Michael J. Bobbitt, the darkness is lightened up with jaunty performances, a smattering of silly antics, and a set design (Luciana Stecconi) that skews to the cartoonish. With almost a dozen capable adults anchoring the cast, the seven children of all ages are given free rein to behave like children, albeit amazingly talented and spirited ones.

BWW Review: TEENAGE DICK, Donmar Warehouse

It's a case of rather ironic programming that the press night for Mike Lew's Teenage Dick at the Donmar Warehouse was on the 12 December, the day of the General Election in the UK. An adaptation of Shakespeare's Richard III, Lew's new play is a meditation on the nature of power transposed to an American high school. Commissioned by The Apothetae, a theatre company dedicated to plays that discuss disability, and with direction by Michael Longhurst, Lew retells Shakespeare with a needed urgency, providing an arch reminder that the voices of the disabled have often been ignored, terrorised or shouted down from the earliest possibility.
