Today, June 26, TKTS in Times Square, the same-day discount theatre outlet for Broadway and Off Broadway shows celebrated 40 years in Times Square. Beginning at 11am, there was a special celebration in honor of TKTS' 40th Anniversary behind the TKTS Booth on Broadway and 47th Street. Tony Award-winner Harvey Fierstein and Broadway star Julie Halston made special appearances to help with the festivities. Check out a look at today's celebration below!

At today's TKTS Times Square 40th Anniversary celebration, celebrity guests Harvey Fierstein and Julie Halston announced a new program at Theatre Development Fund's TKTS Booth in Times Square - the TKTS 7-Day Fast Pass - whereby TKTS patrons may return to the iconic discount ticket booth within 7 days of their TKTS purchase and walk up to window #1 with their TKTS ticket stub, thereby avoiding the longer lines at peak hours. Thus, allowing them quicker access to purchase same-day discounts or future-performance full-priced tickets. Earlier in the program, TDF announced that theTKTS' satellite booth at South Street Seaport, which has been closed since Hurricane Sandy, is currently under reconstruction and will be open sometime in July. That Booth serves thousands of theatregoers who work and live in Downtown Manhattan.

A proclamation from the City of New York will be presented to Theatre Development Fund (TDF) and accepted on its behalf by 'The Unofficial Mayor of Broadway,' 4-time Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein. (Fierstein most recently wrote the book for the Broadway musical Kinky Boots, which won the most Tony Awards of any production this year, including 'Best Musical'). After the presentation, the cast of Forbidden Broadway will perform a special tribute to TKTS written by the show's creator, Gerard Alessandrini.

The George Luscombe Award was inaugurated in 1999. Revolutionary theatre founder and artistic director George Luscombe founded Toronto Workshop Productions in 1959, marking the beginnings of Toronto's alternative theatre movement. He was Artistic Director for 27 years at TWP.

The Leonard McHardy and John Harvey Award (LMJH Award) was inaugurated in 2008 and recognizes the important work of theatre, dance and opera administrators. Recipients of the LMJH Award have at least 10 years of demonstrated commitment to the performing arts, in addition to having made an impact on the industry in Toronto. The award is named after Leonard McHardy and John Harvey, the celebrated owners of Toronto's Theatrebooks, which they co-founded in 1975, and which now stands as one of the longest surviving independent bookstores in the country.
