Currently in previews, the New Yiddish Rep production of Clifford Odets' 1935 masterpiece Awake and Sing! is set to officially open next Wednesday, December 6, at the Theater at the 14th Street Y, 344 East 14 Street (between First & Second Aves). AWAKE AND SING! Begins Performances Today at The Theater at The 14th Street Y

New Yiddish Rep's production of Clifford Odets' 1935 masterpiece AWAKE AND SING! begins performances today (Saturday) at 2 pm, with Opening Night set for December 6th at the Theater at the 14th Street Y, 344 East 14 Street (between First & Second Aves.) A Yiddish version of AWAKE AND SING! was produced on Broadway by WPA's Federal Theatre Project in 1938 and it is this translation that is being performed in the current Off-Broadway revival with English supertitles.

AWAKE & SING! Yiddish Theater Walking Tours Set for Sunday and Monday

The first 24 premium ticket buyers to the upcoming Off-Broadway revival of Clifford Odets' masterpiece AWAKE AND SING!, will receive a Yiddish theater walking tour of Manhattan's Lower East Side with the inimitable Shane Baker. The two options to join this very special 90-minute tour are this Sunday, November 26 or Monday, November 27 at 11 am, beginning at Second Ave. & 12th St. and concluding at 143 East Houston.

Omar Sangare Among Special Guests to Honor 19th-Century Theatrical Icon, Ira Aldridge

Founder and artistic director of New York's United Solo Festival and professor at Williams College, Omar Sangare was invited as a special guest to honor the 150th anniversary of Ira Aldridge's death. The anniversary event was organized by the Polish city of Lodz, where the 19th-century thespian died during a European tour, and where his grave is located. Aldridge, the first internationally celebrated African American actor, died unexpectedly during rehearsals before opening night. A century and a half later, following an invitation from the Lodz mayor's office, Sangare recited excerpts from "Othello" and Shakespeare's poems as part of the anniversary commemoration. Similar events took place internationally to honor Aldridge and his work.

Magic Theatre Celebrates the Life of Playwright-in-Residence Sam Shepard

Pulitzer Prize-winning Playwright Sam Shepard passed away on Thursday, July 27 of complications from ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis). Shepard spent a decade as playwright-in-residence at San Francisco's Magic Theatre, where he premiered his masterworks Buried Child (Pulitzer Prize for Drama, 1979), True West (1980), and Fool for Love (1983, starring Ed Harris and Kathy Baker). Shepard returned to Magic in 2000 to direct the world premiere of his new work The Late Henry Moss, starring Sean Penn, Woody Harrelson, and Cheech Marin.
