Two new character-driven relationship plays, both by award-winning women writers and both inspired by events currently at the forefront of our national consciousness, beat out 1241 other submissions in the inaugural Moss Hart & Kitty Carlisle Hart New Play Initiative. Hart NPI artistic director Christopher Hart will direct Silver Medallion-winning plays Confederates by Suzanne Bradbeer, opening Nov. 9, and Exit Wounds by Wendy Graf, opening Nov. 16, at Grove Theater Center in Burbank, where the two plays will continue to run in repertory through Dec. 16. One will be the named the Gold Medallion winner and open on March 13, 2019 for a six-week, off-Broadway run in the 196-seat "Theater A" at 59E59 Theaters in New York City.
Beetlebung Road LLC, a new theater production company, will launch November 15 to December 9 with a bi-coastal production of Sam Shepard's 'Fool for Love,' to be presented November 15 to December 2 by Theater for the New City, 155 First Ave., Manhattan and December 6 to 9 by The Lounge Theatre, 6201 Santa Monica Blvd., Los Angeles. The production, directed by Kymberly Harris, will arise from a careful artistic process of immersion on many levels. The company chose to debut at Theater for the New City (TNC) as part of that process: to honor and recapture the path of Shepard's 'Buried Child,' which was commissioned by TNC and premiered there in 1978.

Production developed at the Actors Studio West, Martin McDonagh's award-winning black comedy THE BEAUTY QUEEN OF LEENANE, directed by Mark Kemble (Film: co-writer/director 'Bad Hurt'; writer/director award-winning play 'Names'), will run September 14 - October 21 at studio/stage in Los Angeles. From acclaimed writer Martin McDonagh ('Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri') comes a darkly comic tale of four characters trapped in a beautiful, hopeless town. In a remote cottage in Leenane, County Galway, Ireland, spinster Maureen Folan has cared for her manipulative, aging mother Mag for twenty years, and their bond is at the breaking point. When Maureen has a chance at happiness with Pato Dooley - a local man with wider ambitions who sends her messages through his feckless brother Ray - suffocated dreams and simmering resentments surface, culminating in an unexpected climax that pits mother against daughter, love against rejection, and hope against fate.

Now in its twentieth year, the foundation's mission is to underscore the importance of supporting individual artists with unrestricted funding. The awards, totaling $63,000, honor six artists in recognition of their artistic achievements as well as one artist-run organization which has presented exceptional work for 41 years.

Martin Heidegger and Hannah Arendt were leading intellectuals of the twentieth century. In the 1920's, they had a passionate affair. In the 1930's, Heidegger became an ardent Nazi while Arendt became an ardent Zionist. Nevertheless, after the war, they still continued to correspond and to meet. Douglas Lackey dramatizes their relationship in 'Arendt-Heidegger: A Love Story,' a five-character play to be presented by Theater for the New City from September 27 to October 14. Its dialogue and action go beyond known facts, but everything in the play is consistent with them. Alexander Harrington directs.
